see when people try and nitpick me because i call my dog "my dog" when it's technically "the family dog".......well first of all i still call my brother "my brother" and not "the family boy". although maybe that should change. second of all sorry i'm still thinking about the family boy. btw i fell asleep while making this post last night and i think you can tell

Very tenuous link to one of my favourite tweets

if you’re white and wanna write a poc character and feel awkward about it i implore you to ignore any twitblr stuff treating it as a massive ethical burden and instead come in more with the same mindset you’d have if you wanted to write about idk firefighters but didn’t know anything about firefighters so you do... research. Like fuck off with the weird kinda creepy calls for spiritual introspection you’re not writing about god damn space aliens you’re writing about humans and if you think you need more perspective of different life experiences just read?

If I were writing about firefighters I'd also, in addition to just reading about them, take advantage of Our Blessed Internet to ask actual firefighters about how shit works. I'd do the same for a minority I'm not a part of.

I remember when there was this LiveJournal community where you could just ask about anything you needed for your novel - medicine, professions, vehicles, how things function in country X - and people who knew something about that would answer.

We need to bring this back.

And apparently just this summer they DID bring it back - it's called Little Details and it's on Dreamwidth!!!!

Remember, a world where everyone stays in their own boxes and only writes about their own narrow demographic is straight up a goal for racists. If you ever find yourself attempting anti-racism so hard you've looped back to "functionally the same thing racists want", stop, take stock, and ask yourself where things went wrong.

hate when people are like "trust your gut! listen to your intuition!" like okay well my gut is telling me every person i lay eyes on is hunting me for sport and my intuition is saying i should find a secluded cave and live there forever so what do you suggest i do with that information

(Semi-serious answer to joke post incoming) If your gut is sending you endless “UNSAFE!” signals in a situation your logic brain knows is safe, then you trust it by kind of treating it like a conversation with a screaming parrot.

Like going “ok, Gut, what feels unsafe?” And it’ll say “PEOPLE IN THE GROCERY STORE”

and you go, “huh, ok. People in the grocery store aren’t usually dangerous…what makes them scary in the grocery store?” And it’ll go “LOUD AND RUSHED AND BUSY”

and you go “ok, people in the grocery store are probably not dangerous but they’re loud and rushed and busy. Loud and rushed and busy makes me feel stressed. How about we wear earplugs to make it less noisy and go at a less busy time of day?”

And then sometimes you try that and your gut goes “HMMM GROCERY STORE SAFER?” And you go, “yes, grocery store safer.”

Your gut isn’t necessarily correct that the SITUATION is unsafe but it’s usually right that your body/brain FEELS unsafe in the situation. You can trust it by approaching it with curiosity and usually learn something.

this is called self talk and it’s like one of THE most important skills you’ll ever learn in therapy btw

if you cannot convince yourself not to be afraid through self talk, or it’s just not THAT effective on its own, doing small exposures (ie going to the grocery store with earplugs while scared) is basically the rote memorization way of convincing yourself something is safe.

if you do something and are convinced you’re going to die but you do it again and again and again without dying, it’ll convince your body on a very deep (almost subconscious) level that’s it actually safer than you thought and your anxiety will decrease. a pretty extreme version of this is typically used in therapeutic settings for desensitization or severe OCD, but you can practice it more incrementally with yourself (like bringing earplugs, only doing The Scary Thing once a week and then slowly building from there, etc).

practicing exposures and self talk is usually pretty effective, bc it speaks to both your lizard brain understanding of cause and effect and the logical/reasoning centers of your brain on the same issue.

REMEMBER: these things are a skills that strengthen with practice. i can talk myself out of many surface level fears of mine at this point in my life bc i’ve been doing it for years and know what best convinces my brain from experience.

it’s not the most comfortable thing in the world, it’s not a cure-all, and it doesn’t work for everything (psychosis generally can’t be addressed like this, and this kind of self talk can be difficult for some abuse survivors, etc) but for many people, the more you practice incremental exposures and self talk the more effective, more comfortable, and easier it becomes.

we’re gonna be ok btw

it’s ok if you’re scared. or tired. or unsure. or one million billion other complicated emotions at once. but i’ve decided things are going to be ok anyway. and i will hold that belief close to my heart no matter how scared or tired or lonely or depressed or one million billion other things i am. i will hold onto that. and if you’re scared, you can hold onto me. we can carry each other through
