Lewis didn’t join Ferrari for anyone but himself. Framing his impact through what he can do for Charles Leclerc diminishes the weight of his own legacy.

Also, this year’s Met Gala theme is about Black style. You really think that’s the moment to center this rich white man from Monaco? it’s not his lane, not his narrative, and absolutely not his moment

It’s a joke about Ferrari’s inability to deliver a competitive car not a commentary on anyone’s legacy. Whatever happens during Lewis’ time at Ferrari i think it’s going to have very little impact. If he’s successful great if he fails it because Ferrari are Ferrari!

Such a large proportion of people who go to the Met Gala make little to no attempt to embrace the theme. As co-chair and as someone who has demonstrated how to intelligently incorporate the theme into an outfit (see last year’s Met Gala) I think it would be interesting to see Lewis style others.

I don’t see how any driver going would take away Lewis’ moment, the Khardashians will get more coverage (sadly).

“It’s just a joke about Ferrari’s car” doesn’t fly when the joke frames Lewis’ legacy around how much he can uplift Charles. It plays into a long pattern of casting Lewis as the supporting character even when he IS very much the main one.

Saying Lewis’ time at Ferrari will have “very little impact” is not only wrong, it’s deeply disrespectful. He’s the most successful driver in F1 history. His move to Ferrari is already historic.

Suggesting it would be “interesting” to see Lewis style others at the Met Gala completely misses the point. He’s not a stylist. He’s a co-chair because he’s been doing the work. The idea that his role there should be to dress someone else, especially a white man, is the very kind of sidelining I was calling out. That’s not a compliment. It’s a backhanded expectation of service.

The Kardashians getting more coverage is a separate issue, not an excuse. Media sensationalism doesn’t justify pushing a rich white man from Monaco into a moment meant to celebrate Black style. If anything, it should make people more careful about where they shift the spotlight, not more careless

You know, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts from black writers about lack of engagement and just feeling like quitting and stopping writing on here - and that makes me so sad because so many of them are talented and deserve to be told and praised that they are.
