obviously trans people have existed for a very long time across the globe in many contexts, and engaging with this history is central to demystifying and denaturalising cis-heterosexuality, but I also hate that we’re forced to point to history to justify our existence today. Even if we all sprung into being ten years ago that wouldn’t make us any less legitimate as people. This obsession with requiring trans people prove our own social ancestry to justify contemporary struggle is so stupid and cringe. as if history is this ultimate authority, that it is self-justifying. Maybe I am a fully modern subject without any historical precedent! Maybe Frankenstein’s monster is a wholly unique output of modernity! Isn’t that also worth celebrating? Smallpox is one of the deadliest diseases in human history and it was only eradicated 45 years ago.
