I wanted to draw a piece juxtaposing the new party and the old party, to show the stagnancy in time Frieren must experience as an elf that lives for thousands of years. And despite the stagnancy, Frieren comes to realize that the Hero's Journey has undeniably changed her and the rest of her life despite it being a mere 10-year adventure. 🩵

Like the past years it’s going to be PDF only, and completely free. Artists/Writers of all skill-levels are welcome, all entries that follow submission guidelines will be accepted and included in the zine!

WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT
You can write about the reason why Madoka love the Earth so much, if she does something particular on Earth Day, her job as Earth protector, or if she looks for puppies or cute things on Earth when she doesn’t save magical girl… the possibilities are endless. Remember you can draw/write about other characters, but the focus of your piece must be on the Earth and Ultimate Madoka.

When your piece is ready send it to dotzines@gmail.com with:
We’ll send you a confirmation email (so you know we received your piece) as soon as we can. If we don’t after 48 hours please contact us and re-send your email.
You can post cropped wips of your piece (@ our socials so we can reblog/retweet them ♥), but please keep the final thing secret until zine release.
The goal is to have this PDF released on April 22: Earth Day.

The amount of grief in Homura's voice when she says "when did I... become a witch?" actually broke my heart. I tried to incorporate all the elements of this scene: the fire, burning bridges, red spider lilies, 14 clara dolls. There's just so much raw grief and lament in this series. I wish I could watch rebellion for the first time again. 🥹

I want to explain a little more about this piece. Warning Madoka Magica: Rebellion movie spoilers!!
The pink ribbon in the background represents the pink spool of thread shown many times, seemingly representing Homura’s feeling of abandonment from Madoka becoming the Law of Cycles and leaving her alone. It is a reference to Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle."
The clock represents Homura's tragic history of resetting the timeline over and over again to try and save Madoka.
The four soul gems hanging represent the 4 soul gems of Sayaka, Mami, Kyoko, and Madoka, as Homura's soul gem turns into a black King's piece when she becomes the Devil.
I wanted to represent the universe as a chessboard, as she is the black King. By the end of Rebellion, we are living in her new version of the universe. I wanted her wings to envelop the board to show her possession of it, and her possessiveness of Madoka.
The Law of Cycles, god, lays dead at the front of the board, as Homura places Madoka onto the board, tipping it slightly. This is because Homura rips apart the Law of Cycles and brings Madoka back into this new universe. Yet, the balance is precarious as Madoka is meant to be one with the Law of Cycles.
Only Madoka matters. I tried to emphasize this by putting more focus on her, using saturation and value contrast.
The other girls are oblivious, as they had their memories altered. Only Madoka is running, because she feels that something is wrong.
