Had a dream last night that i was a knight and this bigger scarier knight had me on the ground and right before he swung his sword at my neck he said smth like "i mourn the loss of life for the tree who will become your coffin" which shouldnt have turned me on like it did but alas
I think it's hilarious that if they ever learned that Dick broke records in skydiving, the Titans would just not be surprised. They'd be like: yeah. That tracks. He was kinda already flying anyway.
They'd be surprised he didn't do it earlier in life.
"Really took you this long to break the record for skydiving? Getting a bit slow there, old man?"
The earlier you post this the funnier it is
Whoopsie

Everyone thinks Dick is a rule follower cause of the way he speaks, but his actions prove otherwise. Like I feel like he always says “that plan is insane we can’t do it” and then just turns around and does it himself but convinces himself it’s all good cause out loud he said it. Like he’s all “we have to listen to Bruce, he’s right” while he’s sneaking out with the batmobile.

Rocky Horror is turning 50 next month and people still act like being gay was invented by Ellen in 1997
But honestly! Renowned French poet Théophile de Viau wrote the poetic ode to King James titled "The Duke of Buckingham," containing the immortal lines "One man fucks Monsieur le Grand de Bellegarde/Another fucks the Comte de Tonnerre/And it is well known that the King of England/Fucks the Duke of Buckingham" exactly 400 years ago and people still act like being gay was invented by Oscar Wilde in 1890
Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep were buried together in the 25th century BC and people still act like being gay was invented by renowned French poet Théophile de Viau 400 years ago

Lol remember how we were thinking, 'damn coach Wymack must be so proud of Neil for taking care of Jean, he's grown so much.'
(When Jean calls Wymack in TSC and Neil takes the phone all, 'I've got him coach.')
Only to find out that Neil wasn't even supposed to BE IN CALIFORNIA IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Coach, 'why the fuck is Neil there?'
Only for a Raven to die WHILE HE WAS THERE AND WYMACK KNOWS and Neil just shows up back at home and acknowledges nothing.
Safe trip?
Fine thanks, coach.
And Jean?
Much better now.
highly recommend keeping a small portrait of a historical figure who met a grisly end on your work desk. for perspective.

I should have said that I love each comment on your blog, and I agree with most of the comments you make about Dick, supporting his case. However, I have a doubt about one of your recent posts in the Batman and Robin: Year One comic, which talks about Dick's parents. Do you consider them negligent parents for making their son work from the age of 3? Or would it also make sense given his perfectionist behavior and Court of Owls past?
Thank u so much! :D And also sorry for taking so long to respond, I'll go in order-
Talking about Dick's parents is... complicated, because it feels like a taboo to say anything bad about them because of the love that Dick has for them, even years later when he had lived much longer without them than with them in his life.
However, it is also that love that makes him see everything through rose-colored glasses.
Speaking a little about psychology, a child whose parents have been loving to them will never see the damage they really did, not without outside help.
And although people forget, being loving parents is NOT the same as being good parents.
Many people stay with the "they loved me, and sacrificed everything for me" aspect, ignoring the fact that there are things that a child should NEVER experience. This becomes even worse when the child learns to love the activity that their parents instilled in them.
This is the case of Dick. It's not just that his parents made him work with them —which, although many have romanticized it, this IS negligence on the part of the parents, the sacrifice should NOT be given by children—, but they made him risk his life since he was four years old (according to the comics, Dick acts with his parents from this age).
It is not the same to notice that your child is passionate about something from a young age and to encourage them to practice, what Dick's parents did to him: they instilled in him the family's activity to the point of over-demanding him.
Dick probably would have loved the trapeze anyway, right... But it should have been something he chose to do when he grew up. Even if you can say that at the age of five he would have already wanted to act because he sees his parents doing it..., it is still negligent to let a CHILD make a decision that literally puts his life at risk. It's the adults who should set the rules, give them age-appropriate training, and let them be children, without the pressure of "one mistake on your part will cost you and us your lives."
I do NOT doubt that John and Mary may have loved Dick with all their hearts, but they were definitely negligent, perhaps more naivety, because that was all they knew, rather than malice... But still, what they did is not something that should be praised as much as it is.
I also have no doubt that this was definitely one of the reasons for Dick's perfectionist behavior.
And it's difficult to talk about the Court, because it wasn't something that was set up from the beginning, and we don't know the scope of it: we do not know if his parents were actually aware of this or if they were deceived, we also don't know how much of the circus was completely complicit (we know that Haly knew about it, but we cannot say that he was the only one yet), or even if Dick was literally the only one who didn't know...
It is very complicated to establish the basis for determining how much of it was the Court's fault, if the reason why John and Mary trained Dick so young was because of the Court, if they thought it was the best thing to do for him, if they thought that training somehow could have saved him... We don't know.
For now, we can say that only Haly knew, and that in theory, he could have encouraged Dick to learn things that would be useful to him as part of the deal with the Court, but also hoped that Dick could escape that fate and choose his own path, maybe that's why he insisted on training from such a young age, to prepare him to survive... Who knows.
It's complicated, and I'll probably get around to analyzing it in more detail at some point, since, although it's come up several times, it's still a bit ambiguous, unfortunately.
