Saved by the Gastroenteritis (Nanny Buck coda)
The day starts simply enough. Buck gets up early, makes coffee for himself and Eddie, makes breakfast for all three of them, and cleans up after himself all before anyone else is awake. Eddie gets up as Buck dries and puts away the pan he used to make the eggs, kisses him good morning, and sits down with Buck at the table to eat.
Not Doing This Alone (aka Nanny Buck)
To say Eddie is desperate is a gross understatement. His abuela broke her hip, his tia has to work, and he has a twenty-four-hour shift in two days that he can’t find cover for. And he has no-one to watch Christopher. “How about you just hire a babysitter this once, get cover after that, and take some time to sort stuff out?” Chimney offers, and while Eddie knows he means well the thought of a stranger looking after Christopher in their home makes Eddie feel physically ill. He’d rather lose out on the shift and miss a mortgage payment but that isn’t exactly an option, so he relents.
Christmas used to be Eddie’s favourite holiday. When he was seven, he woke up early and occupied himself in his room until the digital clock on his nightstand read 6:30, ran out into the living room, counted the presents, and then woke his parents and Abuela. They drank hot chocolate made on the stove (the good kind with lots of dark chocolate and Abuela’s secret spice blend), opened gifts, and ate a hot breakfast.
Do You Want Me (or Do You Want Me Dead) AKA The Glasses Fic
Buck should be asleep. It’s after five in the morning, they’re fresh off a five-alarm fire that absolutely took it out of him and he’s physically shattered , but his brain just won’t switch the fuck off.
It’s not wondering how today will go that’s making Eddie anxious – he knows exactly how today will go. It’s the fallout he knows is coming.
Buck’s world is ending. Eddie is moving to El Paso, and Buck’s world is collapsing in on itself. He’s getting left behind. Again. He’s not enough for someone to stay. Again.
Eddie’s got it all planned out. Chimney and Maddie are in on it, Bobby is in on it, Hen and Karen are in on it, and Chris is in on it.
See, here’s the thing. Eddie was a repressed gay man. He’d realised he was gay at thirteen then spent the next twenty years with his fingers in his ears saying “la la la I can’t hear you” to any and all queer thoughts or inclinations that crossed his mind.
“You know, every year I say I'm never going overboard with the Christmas decorations again. And here we are,” Eddie grumbles as he tugs at the tangled mess of lights.
It’s hot out and Eddie can’t quite figure out why he’s on Buck’s balcony, copping the full blast of the California summer sun when he could be inside in the air-conditioning. Inside is also where the beers are, and inside is where Buck is.
