the obsession some people have with their ships being canonized…..who are you, the catholic church

If we follow the order of sainthood for ships

  • Grassroot devotion: Petition has been made. People begin speaking of the great works and achievements that have occurred. (Ship equivalent: fanworks, gifsets, are being made by fans)
  • Servant of God/Diocesan phase: The bishop of the diocese or religious community will appoint a postulator to collect documents and make sure everything is above board. (Ship equivalent: BNF creates a well circulated meta. It’s basically fanon at this stage.)
  • Posito/Venerable stage: The fully compiled evidence is sent to Rome to be examined. If it gets approved it’s sent to the next stage. (One of the PTB acknowledges the ship on social media in some way.)
  • Beatification: A miracle needs to be performed in order for this stage to be completed. Then they stay in this stage until another miracle. (There is a meta joke in the original content.)
  • Canonization: After the second miracle has been approved then the ship is canon.

My problem with heterosexual romance novels (which I am reading under duress due to my coworker book club but find somewhat entertaining cuz they're not something I normally wld read) is that whenever the love interest is an asshole the author also makes him all dommy dom. when what I really want is for him to be thoroughly put in his place. All of these shithead Christian grey knockoff guys in these books would be excellent brat material but nobody cares what I want. Nobody cares what I want

IF YOU ARE IN NC AND YOU VOTED, CHECK IF YOUR NAME IS ON THIS LIST.

The North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled in a 2-1 decision that over 60,000 votes cast in last year’s closely contested state Supreme Court race must be verified and recounted. The ruling comes after Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin, who lost the race, challenged the eligibility of tens of thousands of 2024 voters. Those voters will now have 15 days to verify their eligibility, potentially changing the outcome of the election. Check your name here: https://thegriffinlist.com

this is ideology eating itself it's so amusing to me.

Like what kind of manufacturing base do you think America has right now? we're going to bring Factory Jobs back to Detroit, girlies. It's going to work, because we're Fighting Woke. Woke will Die and its death will usher in a new age of American Prosperity. By way of. Uh. Oh. Oh no. Is it supposed to do that?

"We're going to get companies to build factories in the US!! We're going to bring manufacturing back here!!" Are you?

Trump heard that Biden set money on fire with the CHIPS act and said. We can do that but with everything.

Most intelligent graduate of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Even if we had those steel mills? The US doesn't have enough iron/scrap steel to run through them. Their precious tariffs shot them in the foot. (We buy a lot of steel and aluminum from Canada and Mexico)

Not that they were REALLY going to revitalize US manufacturing/mining jobs. We cost too much to pay, not enough Americans are trained in this kind of work, and the field is riddled with the "DEI crowd" the president hates by sheer force of "People are retiring faster than we can hire/train new people, so we have to let in People of Color and Women to take their place."

yeah i was a welder during covid and i watched a generation of men die or retire. there's virtually no boomer manufacturers left, and the old farts pushing numbers around in the offices never knew how to run the damn factories very well in the first place. Gen X'rs are even worse administrators because all they know is turn up the pressure on laborers, freeze wages and cut bonuses, and hire an infinite stream of grifter business consultants to lie to the stockholders.

young men are bad workers because they're young. they don't know shit and haven't had time to learn things like 'if you show up late, get drunk on the clock, and fight your coworkers, you get fired'. if the work is exhausting and the pay is worse than mcdonalds, your factory hires an endless stream of shitty young bucks who leave once they get a little skill or get fired for being terrible. then you institute grueling mandatory overtime to make up for constant labor shortages and your old men start failing...

anyway. modern american manufacturing has been a shitshow for decades and a flaming shitshow since covid, and ramping production up will require a reckoning with labor realities that the business class in this country simply can't do. i would like to be optimistic about unionization, but it's pretty likely this administration is going to hand a blank check and unlimited military power to anyone who promises to get their striking men back to 'work'.

I was talking about this with some friends just yesterday.

The cost of time + raw materials to build infrastructure and the additional cost of lost production while hiring and training their new work force will be even more expensive in the long run for businesses than just putting their heads down and paying the import tax over the next four years.

There's also the fact that most of the product we import vs manufacturer it ourselves is because we were outsourcing the labor to countries that can do THAT cheaper. So even if companies did build new factories, the jobs they created would not create stable, well paying positions with reasonable hours and a retirement pension. I guarantee you not even the most desperate blue collar American is going to work for sub-minimum wages in exchange for the hellish conditions that overseas workers are forced to endure. The only way to compete with that level of exploitation is to return to slave labor.

But oh look! All these lovely prisons with lots of nice empty cells, run by private for-profit companies who are "friends" of the people in power and an administration absolutely giddy to find reasons to jail even more people...

I once wrote a 1500 word essay on something I'd forgotten to read in the 40 minutes before class. Including the time it took to read the thing I'd forgotten to read.

I got an A on that paper.

Writing is a skill. Skill is muscle. If you don't use a muscle, it atrophies. If you are a student and you are tempted to use genAI to cheese an assignment, I am begging you for your own sake to not do it.

This is not a moral stance about genAI (which is shit at what it's ostensibly for, and full of lies and evil, and fueled by art theft and burning rainforests, and there is no good reason to ever use it for anything; that's the moral reason for why you shouldn't use it), it is a purely pragmatic stance based on the fact that if you use it you will never learn the single most essential skill that is used in every single workplace.

You will never learn to bullshit.

And if you cannot bullshit, you will not understand when you are being fed bullshit by others.

For your own sake you must learn to do your own thinking, your own bullshitting, because our trashfire society runs on bullshit and for your own good you must become fluent in it, because very few people will bother to translate it for you. It was asinine in the late 90s, and it is asinine today, but it is the central truth of adult society: everything is bullshit, and you need to know what is going on beneath the bullshit, and you need to be able to bullshit back if necessary.

I know that the expectations being placed on you are ever-increasing, and I know that it does not seem rational to put effort into explaining the plot of a Charles Dickens novel to someone who has read the thing 50 times and will read 50 identical essays about it over the weekend. I know you are being handed ever-greater heaps of what is functionally mindless busywork because of an institutional obsession with metrics that don't actually measure learning in a useful way. High school was nightmarish in the 90s and I am fully aware that it has only gotten worse.

Nevertheless, you must try, if only for your own sake. Curiosity is your best hope, and dogged determination your best weapon. Learn, please, if only out of spite.

I was able to get an A on that paper because I was able to skim the reading, figure out what it was about, and bullshit for 1500 words in the space of 40 minutes.

Imagine what you can do if you learn to bullshit like I can bullshit.

For my senior year of AP English, I was assigned reading over Easter break. We were instructed to read The Old Man And The Sea, and save the rest of the short stories in the book for the first week back.

Unfortunately, what I heard was "read everything BUT The Old Man And The Sea."

Double unfortunately: the first day back was a test, on The Old Man And The Sea. Which I had read exactly zero words of. It was, notably, a short essay test. It wasn't multiple choice or fill in the blank. It was designed to require deliberate answers from scratch, entirely out of your own head, with nothing to go on BUT what was in your head.

And in the course of about 45 minutes, I was able to use the questions of the test itself to piece together a vague enough sense of how the story went to bullshit my way through other questions. I gave wide, thematic answers that were extremely light on details, since I did not know any of them, and did not even know this test would be happening until it was in front of me. An essay test for an AP-level English class.

I had a starting point of zero information, and an essay test about the thing I was supposed to have read.

I bullshitted my way to a B+ on it.

On a test I should have gotten a ZERO on.

It's been 16 years since I took that test.

I couldn't tell you a damn thing about The Old Man And The Sea.

But you better fucking believe I still know how to bullshit, and when someone is trying to bullshit me.

The power and utility of knowing how bullshit works CANNOT be overstated. It is one of the most important skills you can ever have.

My favorite part of this is the little “Yet I’m still failing” at the bottom of the screencap. It’s not yet occurred to you to change something you’re doing? Maybe try not using ChatGPT?

Got reminded again of my old coworker who was a massive misogynist but also trans inclusive. Told me he believed trans women are indeed women because "only women would be stupid enough to want to be women"

I wonder what he's doing now

He also aggressively corrected himself whenever he accidentally misgendered a trans guy we knew because "there's already more women than men in the world, the more numbers we steal from them, the better." Did that even when the trans guy wasn't around.

I need to point out that he was completely serious btw. This man had no sense of humor on purpose.

He was a cook at the restaurant/bar I was a bartender at, and almost punched a costumer once because he overheard him talking about how women belong in the kitchen. Told me he thought women should stay out of kitchens, that cooking is a man's job and when I asked him what he thinks women should be doing, he went quiet for a moment, then proceeded to explain to me the following

"I trust a bitch to run a kitchen as much as she can run a country, they should do shit like plumbing. Or electricity. Something you can just learn to do and don't need to lead, you know?"

Apparently women are good at "fixing shit". He claimed that he doesn't trust male plumbers or electricians except if they're gay because "something most be wrong with you if you want to go fix other people's houses, that's that maternal instinct"
