back again encouraging people to start using the hobby stuff they've been acquiring for years

reasons to start can include:

  • the hobby industry wants only for us to keep buying and never use, so using the stuff pushes back
  • some hobby items do not survive long term storage
  • if there's some craft or hobby thing that you want to do but feel your skills aren't up to, consider that those skills won't improve if you don't practice on other things
  • using it allows it to move from the hobby hoard to the [whatever you made it into] hoard, where you may be more likely to enjoy it more often than just when you specifically look at the hobby hoard
  • making things is good for the brain

curious to see what other reasons people might add

Me trying to persuade myself to use the foamboard I've been "saving for a special occasion" 😅

I wouldn't be encouraging people to use the hobby stuff they've been acquiring for years if I hadn't personally started using the hobby stuff I've been acquiring for years, and found out it felt pretty good, actually XD

So, I know exactly how it feels to be saving that thing for something special

and also how--for me--it normally ends up feeling pretty special to use it at all

Not always, though! there will inevitably be hobby projects that don't go the way you expected. I have learned (and am still learning) to acknowledge that nothing's perfect and mistakes happen and then move on to the next project.

While it's true that you can never mess up a project if you never do it, that also keeps you from making the things you end up having fun with and loving, doesn't it?

the fact that we only know the year faramir died and not when eowyn did haunts me man. im haunted! who died first do you think. which one of them was left behind to mourn yet another loved one. faramir has more dunedain heritage, implying he will probably live longer but hes also already older than eowyn so it might have cancelled out. i need them to have simultaneous heart attacks for my own good.

Faramir lived to 120 and Eomer lived to his 90s. There's a 12 year age gap between Faramir and Eowyn, so for them to die in the same year, Eowyn would have needed to live to 108.

I doubt Eowyn lived as long as that, but considering Eomer's longevity (both of them had Numenorean blood from their grandmother, who Eowyn in particular took after) and the fact that women tend to live longer than men, I imagine Eowyn died in her mid to late nineties. It's not impossible she even lived to see a hundred. Faramir almost definitely outlived her, but hopefully only for a few years.

Definitely think this was to her preference. I think she was always glad that between Faramir being twelve years her older, and her having some Numenorean blood, they'd be able to live their lives together, while also ensuring that Faramir would in all probability to outlive her, sparing her having to be left behind by him (and having to care for him and watch him decline as she had watched her uncle do).

If we're doing headcanons, I imagine that in her final days, when she was bedbound, she had a lot of dreams of Rohan, and her youth, and of herself and Eomer and even Theodred, that she smelt the plains and the horses, and that before she died she heard Eomer and Theodred and Theodwyn and Eomund and Theoden calling her.

beloved mutual you cant be doing this to me. her being called home by everyone shes lost...smelling the plains oh man

God, seriously.

also, i like these weird character designs.

This is actually super harmful to physically disabled people because they’re discriminated against in almost exactly the same ways as mentally ill people are. People with chronic pain are told to just suck it up and ignored when they try to find help, people are regularly denied mobility aids on the ground that they don’t really need them because they’re not /really/ sick, etc etc. We need to stop framing ourselves as mentally ill people as more oppressed than physically disabled people.

i originally saw this comic when i was mentally ill but not physically disabled, and now that i’m both, i do actually see it differently. it’s a p poor representation of the differences in the ways people are treated. the main difference i’ve experienced is that when you’re asked for “proof,” a diagnosis of a physical problem is much more acceptable than a diagnosis of a mental problem. i never could’ve gotten an incomplete grade for anxiety, depression, and PTSD, but i was given one for GERD, even though they have nearly identical results on my productivity. when there’s no system to go through, though, you’re right. on an individual basis, i’m seen as just as over-dramatic for having a cane when i “look fine” than i am for having scars when my trauma “isn’t that bad”

some examples of pink in the animal kingdom. while there are no mammals with pink fur, it's naturally found in some birds, insects and fish. otherwise, usually due to genetic pigment mutations like albinism or leucism, some animals appear pink due their extreme paleness – their blood is visible through their skin!

imma say it. “kung fu panda” did more for body positivity and saying that  you can be fat and still be healthy and liked than ANYTHING any beauty companies trying to get your money.

kfp also respects women more than any beauty company too.

also it had a positive relationship between an adopted child and his stepfather even after he found out he was adopted

Hey yknow how Viper was born without fangs, but instead of being rendered helpless as her family thought she’d be, she instead used her other skills to become the best warrior in her clan?

And how Tigress had severe, destructive anger issues when she was younger, but instead of being painted as a “problem child” she was instead taught her how to channel her emotions into something constructive?

And how Crane trained extra hard to impress a girl, and was by all rights the hero of his own story, but he still didn’t get her in the end? And how the girl isn’t shamed for it?

It’s almost as if you get more mileage out of treating your characters (and the people they resemble) with compassion than you do just shamelessly stamping them with your own misconceptions and hang ups.

The whole central ethos of the franchise is that there’s no such thing as being The Best™ - there’s just being the best version of yourself you can be, and honoring/channeling your own strengths is the wise and badass thing to do.

Daily affirmation:

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

how i'm handling my students using AI to write papers:

-don't accuse them on using AI from the get-go and instead ask them to informally define all the huge words that they used in their essay which i know they don't know the meaning of

-ask to see their original file where they "wrote" the essay. go to version history to see if it was just copy and pasted and then just edited a bit. i keep an eye out for the shit like "certainly! here's an essay about...."

-if they own up to it, they can re-do the assignment for a higher grade even if there will be an automatic penalty. if they don't, i process it like plagiarism and get my supervisor involved.

And this is much better than the immediate accusations. Some students have a good vocabulary. Stop accusing them of faking their essays without proof, and this is a good way to check.

Fellow students please stop using AI, go back to promising not to kill the school nerd if they do all your homework or something.
