Amazing Acipenceridae

sturgeon facts

Hello!

Welcome to sturgeonposting. I’m sturgeonposting. My pronouns are they/them. I’m 22. I have autism.

This is my blog where I post about sturgeon fish, which are my special interest.

For sturgeon facts, go to #sturgeon facts

For information on a specific sturgeon, search the scientific name as I tag all my posts with scientific names. Some species have multiple common names.

For sturgeon-only content, block/ filter #not sturgeon???

I tag #tw fish as food if I’m talking about fish as food or #tw food in general cause I got an eating disorder

This is sturgeonposting. There are sturgeon here. I do not want to hear about how you dislike sturgeon. Please go away. I don’t need you to tell me that you think something I love is ugly. (I also don't really want to hear about how much you love caviar.)

Feel free to request a specific sturgeon species in my asks, or to ask any questions you may have about sturgeon fish. You can also just shoot me an ask about anything and I’ll most likely answer it. I especially love receiving pictures of sturgeon, if you’ve taken any.

I struggle with a few chronic illnesses and general states of unwellness, which sometimes causes me to disappear from tumblr for various unpredictable amounts of time, but I promise I will always return eventually to gab about sturgeon fish.

You can check out my Etsy at The Starry Sturgeon! I sell patches, plushies, beaded jewelry, and other sturgeon-themed goods. Everything is handmade and most of it is created using secondhand, hand-me-down, or vintage materials. It’s just me in my bedroom trying to make some extra money to help with living expenses. Pricing is always negotiable and I am also open to trades. DM me!

Thanks for visiting sturgeonposting and happy sturgeonposting. This has been sturgeonposting.

P.S. I also have a side blog called @shuttletatted so if you’re here from the world of fiber arts wondering why you got a like from a fish blog, welcome and I hope you’re less confused.

P.P.S. I have a second side blog called @marrowsucker which is where I put personal stuff if you’re interested in knowing the sturgeon behind the posting

did you know sturgeon are as old as the dinosaurs and did you know they don't have teeth and did you know they can live to be 150 years old and weigh 200 pounds and be six beautiful feet long and did you know I'm in love with them

Given that sturgeons have five rows of scutes, they are basically pentagonal (we can squish them around a bit to make them regular). This of course means that we can use twelve of them to make a dodecahedron. If we used Acipenser stellatus (one of whose common names, according to wikipedia, is the stellate sturgeon) for the faces, we might call the resulting object a stellate dodecahedron (if we imagine the chosen pentagon being roughly in the middle of our fish with the fronts facing outwards, I think this would look vaguely like a small stellated dodecahedron). Of course, by extending the faces we can get a great dodecahedron, which in our case we’ll call the great stellate dodecahedron (I don’t think this changes much visually since we’re working with fully 3D — though freely intersecting — sturgeon whose bodies will mostly block out the new geometry. I could be wrong about that though.). Now if only we can figure out what it means to make star polygons out of fish, we can create great stellated stellate dodecahedrons and small stellated stellate dodecahedrons. And I’m sure we can all agree that sturgeon are great, so we could even call the great stellated version the Great Great Stellated Stellate Dodecahedron.

Have you ever gone looking for the stars under the water?

Stellate Sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) AKA starry sturgeon

Eastern Europe and Central Asia; dams have blocked them from spawning in the Danube, Volga, and other E. Europe rivers; they mainly persist in the Ural River and Caspian & Black Seas.

Status: Critically Endangered

So I saw this baby sturgeon at a pet shop and the worker there didn’t know the exact species, but mentioned he thought it was a white sturgeon. I wanted to ask you cause i figured you would know. Super cute little guy either way.

I hate to be a naysayer, but if it’s in ‘Murka white sturgeon is the most likely answer.

I just realised that two sturgeon images in your (f)introduction I happened to use in one of my sturgeon videos! The starry sturgeon and the beluga! :DD

Nothing crazy, I just think that these pictures are very good close-up pictures of sturgeons (hence why I used them and no doubt why you did too)

I love these two because they look equally shocked and disgusted by whatever is unfolding in front of them and i like to pretend they are gossiping with each other

probably a taxonomy question more than sturgeon, but I saw today that beluga sturgeon are "huso huso" and not "acipenser ____" do you know why that is?

There are two species in genus Huso; beluga and kaluga. There are a few more minute reasons that they are classed separately but the main one is that during adolescence the huso species’ mouths shift upwards from the ventral position to a forward facing position. This allows them to take on a more active predator role in their environments, which in turn factors in to their relatively large size even amongst the other sturgeons.

Despite these differences, there is some argument among ichthyologists that the Husos should be a part of genus Acipenser due to the wealth of other similarities between these two geni.

Kaluga (H. dauricus) vs Siberian Sturgeon (A. baerii). The kaluga’s mouth is visible while the siberian sturgeon’s mouth is not.

Hi! These are pretty terrible pictures but I visited the monterey bay aquarium today and thought of you lol
