Cory Booker has been talking in the senate for over 20 hours now

He’s not filibustering. He’s protesting the current administration.

For those of you from outside the US or those of you who didn’t pay attention in government class, in the US senate there’s really no limit to the amount of time a senator can speak. So sometimes if they don’t want a bill to pass they just. Don’t stop talking. To hopefully get past the deadline to vote on a bill. This is called filibustering.

Senator Cory Booker isn’t doing that. He’s disrupting “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able”. Just in protest. This doesn’t usually happen.

He’s less than 20 minutes away from breaking the record of the longest speech given on the senate floor

Cory Booker has officially broken Strom Thurmond’s record for longest speech on the senate floor and he’s still going

For those of you wondering what he’s been talking about this whole time, his staff wrote down a bunch of stuff for him to read like stories from people across the political spectrum opposed to what the administration is doing. He’s also been telling personal anecdotes about meeting important civil rights leaders and other democratic senators have been pausing him for “questions” but the questions have been as long as a small speech and have both served the purpose of giving him a second to sit down and updating him on the news that he’s been missing while he’s been talking.

yeah, people have pointed out how ironic it is that for all Musk's stupid invocations of The Matrix, Vivian is the one whose life story has played out like Neo

It's very common for former "designer babies" to have trauma from not just the fact that they were basically a product sold to their parents as superior healthy optimized children, but also because biology doesn't work like that & the science is overhyped so many parents become resentful & abusive when the perfect kid they paid a lot of money for ends up just being a regular imperfect human being.

The first "designer babies" are already fully grown adults & many of them are speaking out about how messed up it is.

I’ve been listening to the people in the apartment below me have arguments for two years now and I still can’t figure out what language they’re speaking. The best I can narrow it down is like if Portuguese and Hebrew had a baby. Is that a common pidgin combination

I just listened to a clip of this and jesus christ you fucking got it. there are like 3500 people in the whole united states who speak this and two of them are in a very fraught marriage four feet below me

“Humans are inherently selfish--" Then why do so many cultures value hospitality, to the point of dictating it in their religions? Why is it so common for hosts to offer their visitors their best food, and as much of it as they can? At some point, multiple cultures decided that they knew what it felt like to be alone and vulnerable, and promised each other to never let those who stay with them feel that way. That doesn't sound very "inherently selfish" to me.

"humans are the plague"

No. Humans are animals as much as the fish and the bear. We are pack animals who have survived by strong bonds and community.

Do not buy the lie that humans are inherently evil. Societies can trick you into believing this, but it's not the truth of humanity.

Humans crave being together, sharing together, and thriving together.

Capitalism just wants you to believe we're destined for selfishness.

i didn't program y'all to be selfish c'mon

not to be all i told you so about ancestry tests but 23 and me went bankrupt and can now legally sell human genetic information to the highest bidder, as per their privacy policy which was signed by approx. 15 million test takers

im still mind blown that people really readily submitted their dna so they could be classed by ethnicity on paper permanently. like yeah theres no way this could go badly huh

Its weird how quickly stereotyping cats based on color has taken off online now

I'd say its just people wanting to lovingly tease their pets, but I've come across several conversations recently of people wondering what genetically causes orange cats "to be that way". I think it's because they are a cat.

the great thing about preserving kink as part of pride is that it’s the one thing that rainbow capitalism can never touch. I sincerely doubt that you’ll ever see Arby’s tweeting about forcefem anytime soon.

I support kinky and sexual behavior at pride, but I do have to say that I think it’s not accurate to think that capitalism can’t recuperate it. Capitalism can recuperate just about anything (including anticapitalism!) Something like kink which has an already built in commerce component (buying supplies, paying for tickets to events, etc.) is already deeply interconnected into capitalism. That’s far from exclusive to kink (and shouldn’t be like singled out as a reason to be reactionary about kink obviously) but I do think it’s important to be realistic when we’re talking about queerness and capitalism. I’ve seen some folks say this about certain slurs too, that “no one would put x on a shirt at target” or whatever, but they would. If enough people would buy it they would. There is nothing they won’t try to sell back to you.

Honestly, y’all should probably reblog this version. I sorta forgot about how capitalism encroaches onto all aspects of living and that very much still includes the sexual.

I went to my first ever actual Big City Pride Parade (I do not live in The Big City) last year with my partner (who does live in The Big City). We were watching the floats go by, I was slightly high on secondhand smoke, I was dunking on the businesses ("I am not cheering a bank"), we booed the cops and the comptroller (as one does), cheered the schools and libraries (yay books!), and at some point in the haze, there was a float with a couple of men in skimpy leather angel and devil harnesses/briefs, grinding and gyrating and rubbing their nipples. My partner turned to me and said "That's our natural gas company." "Hwat."

I needed an encyclopedic memory of forks. I don't remember why, but I did spend the entire time in a library desperately reading up on the history of forks.
