I saw some fan art of fei du recently he's wearing a bolo tie? Was it ever mentioned that he wears bolo ties? Cuz he does look good in it Never seen someone rock a bolo tie like that..he made it look so classy and elegant ✨️
okay so i have absolutely NO BUSINESS answering ANY asks tonight because it's 1030 and i have 9 papers left to grade, and also i'm utterly bonkers; but i couldn't leave this one alone, because:
…it's actually "official" art, to promote the donghua that never got made. and not only is fei du wearing a bolo tie (which, no, he never does in the book—we only know for sure about one necktie, that he takes off and blindfolds himself with Because of Reasons) but it's also apparently outrageously expensive? what, is that actually an emerald?! feishir pls why are you being so gauche. maybe he has to impress investors from texas or something.
other than that his drip is mad as usual. but alas i really cannot get next to the bolo tie even if it does cost a kajillion dollars/is made out of an emerald the size of a pigeon's egg—because i grew UP in texas, so i'm used to seeing them on guys who look more like tommy lee jones in the three burials of melquiades estrada. honestly the photos are too demoralizing to share, especially after fei du in sleek dark blue pinstripe, but if you want to see what a bunch of unwashed white guys from the southwestern US look like, in bolo ties, be my guest.
(as a palate cleanser: here is the lwz donghua art. also with luo yiguo, who is, as he should be, a tubby calico. this is my ideal luo-dui. look at his disaster hair. his smartass dad smirk. they are both perfect.)
Out of curiosity rb and put in the tags how many fics come up when you type your last name into ao3. Apparently even though my last name is uncommon there's like 500
Fake rare last name havers when real ones come at them LOL
(hot take) (i don't know anything about politics) will these tariffs be good for the environment? seems like a surplus of cheap shitty goods and large-scale shipping are pretty bad in lots of ways. maybe driving down consumption by making everything more expensive is Good Actually. and if you produce things locally -> less shipping -> less ocean pollution and noise pollution??
I don't think shipping is a huge problem in the scheme of things as ocean transport is surprisingly efficient these days, but sure crashing the economy and putting millions of people out of work will reduce power consumption at least.

as I understand it the plastic pollution is mostly from fishing fleets? I think whale populations are recovering now that we're not killing them by the thousands any more, but yeah I assume less human activity would make the oceans more comfortable for them.
if by "mostly" from fishing fleets, you mean "about 20%" then yeah:
ocean plastic is actually mostly stuff that people dropped on the ground on land and it just ended up in the ocean eventually because of, like, gravity. as far as I can tell cargo ship activity doesn't contribute much at all to the problem except inasmuch as some of the garbage people generate was probably on a cargo ship at some point I guess. but they don't usually dump stuff directly from the ships into the ocean, no
All of this is assuming that Trump is correct about the tariffs that they will magically return manufacturing to the US. But that's not going to happen. Companies are not going to pay US union wages and benefits. They are going to raise prices and keep their factories whereever.
Will this reduce some consumption? Sure and that's fine. I'm not opposed to actually taxing Temu and Shein like they SHOULD be taxed and stopping people buying crap just cause it's cheap.
But for necessities, stuff will just be more expensive. No one is shelling out to build entire new towns and factories and training a new workforce AND paying for their health insurance, etc.
In order to bring manufacturing back to the USA it requires two things:
1. Tariffs executed in a planned, well-reasoned way
2. Support for developing manufacturing plants in the USA (which requires not having a tariff on the things like machine tools that will allow us to build the factories that will allow us to re-shore).
These tariffs don’t satisfy either requirement. To quote expert Matt Stoller, who is someone that REALLY wants to bring manufacturing back to the USA, “while Trump made it harder to import, he also made it harder to build factories in the U.S. to replace imports.” This blog post by a board game company explaining why these tariffs will kill the board game industry lays it out in a way that makes it immediately possible to understand.
As Stoller explains: “It takes years to set up a factory and reorient a supply chain, and lots of investment. CEOs won’t commit to that unless they think the tariffs are going to remain in place. These particular tariffs, done with IEEPA and with a suggestive nod that Trump might want to negotiate, don’t lend themselves to re-shoring. Instead, it’s likely that CEOs will just raise prices and seek to out-wait this administration...”
So, yeah, expect layoffs and high prices.
for an ideal world

yonkers is such a deeply unserious name for a place. i bet nobody even dies there
no they do i know cause i once saw the headline "7 dead in Yonkers incident" and said "what the fuck is a Yonkers incident"
Fuckin wild
so. my wife came downstairs just as i took a bite out of the remaining half red onion on the counter. literally within seconds of just getting away with it. i looked at her, and she looked at me, and we both sat there a moment, all frozen, beforeshe said babs, what the fuck. i tried to say i can explain but it came out as or corn explorn because such was the onion in my mouth that there was no room for words. its honestly a miracle that she understood me at all. at least, i'm assuming that she understood me because she did let me get my bearings for a few moments. a smarter man would've used that time to think up a good lie, but instead i just chewed as fast as i could because i knew i was gonna have to tell a whopper and i really wanted to be able to use big words again.
big words are instrumental to telling a whopper.
anyway, i totally ran out of time. i barely got my first swallow of onion in before she said well?, and i did at least have an empty mouth to match my empty head. but also i had no lies. so i looked her dead in the face, opened my mouth and waited, every bit as curious as her, to hear what excuse my mouth was gonna come up with.
im pregnant, said my mouth.
great job, mouth, said my brain.
mmmmm onion, said my mouth.
better you than me, said my wife. then she went upstairs. it has been two hours she still refuses to kiss me. im devastated. im shook. im crying a little, i think.
(but that might just be the onion.)
Okay but now I have to know
What was the truth??
Because it simply cannot be as obvious as “what, I like onions”
It can’t
Because that would not need a lie
I know people who eat onions like apples simply for pleasure
I don’t understand them, but they say “what, I like onions”, and we both shrug, and they carry on
Also. Was. Was the plan to eat the whole thing? Just no more half red onion? Because the alternative form of “getting away with it” was you were planning to put it back with a bite taken out of it before she came in and that is if anything more unhinged
okay so i do this thing that i call tummy tacos where i put all the ingredients to a taco in front of me, but like, separate. and then i take big bites of all of them. but just one at a time. like one big mouthful of taco chicken and then swallow and then a separate big mouthful of chopped cabbage and then swallow and then a corn tortilla and you get the idea.
(my wife considers it Barbaric. she does not approve of tummy tacos.)
but yesterday i had this idea for stomach pico de gallo there i was gonna eat an onion and then a tomato and then a jalapeno and then some cilantro. thud achieving salsa internally. but i underestimated the call of the onion. i really could give a damn about everything else after the onion. i felt the love of jesus in that onion.
and thus i fell into folly.
