Mus pus, pus mus, miukukansa!

Pitkällisestä painostuksesta johtuen olen päättänyt hyväksyä Sherlock Holmesin BBC:n Uudesta Sherlockista kilpailijaksi. Tähän päätökseen johti se, että hahmon esittäjällä Benedict Cumberbatchilla on suomalaisia sukuyhteyksiä Keravalla, jossa hänen isoäitinsä rakastajatar Bettiina-Annastiina Kurkkutilkku istui vankilassa Kekkosen aikaan.

No, ei sentään, mutta aika hyvä juttu.

Seuraava päivitys ei ole aprillipilaa:

Ensimmäinen kierros käynnistyy huomenna 2.4., suunnilleen kello 19*.

Samaan aikaan käynnistyy myös mahdollisuus rosmota äänestyksiä. Rosmoustöiden viimeinen palautuspäivä on 8.4., ennen keskiyötä.

Mössöläiset on pyritty asettamaan osittain vastakkain hauskasti, mutta joidenkin kohdilla päädyttiin arvontaan. Olen joillekin miukuraukoille lisännyt propagandaa suomiplorpoturnauksesta, jos propaganda on liittynyt hahmon miukuisuuteen. Tämän takia joillain erityisen säälittävillä hahmoilla (köh, Riitaoja, köh) saattaa olla jo vahva propagandapohja.

Mässykkäisäntä lunastaa pidättämänsä oikeuden muutoksiin, mutta ei hirvien takia, vaan koska laskeskeli, että tukkii seuraajiensa tumppuvirrat tyystin, jos kaikki äänestykset vapautetaan kerralla. Siispä ensimmäinen erä äänestyksiä julkaistaan aivan näillä näppäimillä (noin 17:30), seuraava kuuden jälkeen ja viimeinen siinä seitsemän pintaan.

I think I've figured out why the fact that so many people I know use generative ai to do things like write emails for them bothers me so much is that. Like. You're not even participating in your own life. I get that emails are boring and sometimes even challenging to write but you are communicating with other humans. The words written will represent your ideas and your feelings and you as a person. If you can't be bothered to do that, if you're so far removed from human connection that you don't care if people get the real you or a computer imitating you, then you've already lost. We've all lost.

Thrilled I get to post my part of @ghostsharkpress ‘s transology zine before pride month ends. Our prompt was to recontextualize a formative childhood cartoon through the lense of transness/gncness.

These are thoughts I’ve had spilling around in my head for a while and seeing how important Treasure Planet was for me as a kid I thought it would be perfect. I always struggled with the fact I don’t really have any older male guide or figure to learn myself from so as a kid I tried to mimic the masculinity of shows or my peers. Growing older and wanting to step out of boyhood has really been a journey of self discovery and self worth and I’m really proud of the person I’m becoming.

Recently, while staring far too long at a potato chip, it occurred to me that the ridges could possibly be used to create a lenticular effect. So I got out some chip dip (and the smallest paint brush I have) to test it out. I started with a simple 2-frame illustration of a football and a basketball, then I painted a little sour cream and onion dip bird. 🥔🕊️

I know it's highly unethical and short-sighted to name kids in whimsical ways, or even name them something mildly unappealing or unflattering, but I am certain that if people would just name their kids whatever the fuck they wanted, as a normal practice, you'd still never meet a boring person whose given name is Revenge.

"Born on 18th October 1918 to the joy of father released from a prison camp, a healthy son we have named Varma Kosto [lit. Certain Revenge]. At Ruovesi. Lahja and Lyydia Rantala."

Varma Kosto Turunen was a Finnish trade union activist and politician. According to the Wikipedia article, he was told he was named after his older brother Varma Kosto who had died of scarlet fever at the age of three before he was born. Had he been born a girl, the parents would have named their daughter Varma Kerttu (Certain/Sure/Confident Warbler).

When naming his brother, the father had told the pastor the name would avenge his ancestors. The pastor warned him that vengeance might come to the parents as well. According to Varma Kosto, the name referred to the oppression his father had faced by the Russian Empire.

However, Varma Kosto Turunen was not born on 18th October 1918. He was born on 17th March 1913 (this is the date on his grave, so I don't think the Wikipedia article is wrong). His brother was born on 25th April 1909. It could possibly refer to the date his father was released, but the sentence does make it seem like 19th October 1918 is the date of his birth. Also according to the Wikipedia article, his father died of Spanish flu in January 1920 at the prison camp prior to his release.

I also don't know who Lahja and Lyydia Rantala would be. Possibly family friends or relatives? Aunts? Sisters of the parents or wives of older siblings? According to Anna Warsell's Master's Thesis, there were also other children in Finland named Varma Kosto after the Civil War (which the 1918 date coincides with), even in Ruovesi according to local oral history.

Thankfully, just googling the name Varma Kosto Rantala gave me the answer: the birth of Varma Kosto announced in the newspaper is not Varma Kosto Turunen but Varma Kosto Rantala. Lahja (Gift/Present) is more commonly a woman's name, however Lahja Rantala is the name of his father.
