‘9-1-1’ showrunner Tim Minear unpacks Eddie’s reunion with son Christopher — and what’s next for their relationship

After 11 episodes apart, Eddie Diaz has finally reunited with his son, Christopher, on "9-1-1." Season Eight, Episode 12, of the ABC drama picked up three weeks after Episode 10, when Eddie (Ryan Guzman) moved back home to El Paso, Texas, to reunite with Chris (Gavin McHugh), who left Los Angeles at the end of Season Seven. The episode, titled "Disconnected," also saw dispatcher Maddie Han (Jennifer Love Hewitt) deal with the aftermath of her kidnapping.

“Eddie and his relationship with his parents vis-à-vis Christopher is very much the focus of Eddie's story in the next episode.”

something to look forward to (or dread) in the next episode.

Buddie: Eddie's Seasons 5 and 8 parallels

Ever since Eddie left in 8x10, I've been thinking about the way season 8 episodes have paralleled with season 5 and they've been very specific with regards to Eddie's storylines. It's almost like Tim's redoing it by having the episode numbers align with the way they were back then.

Here's what I mean.

5x1 "Panic" vs. 8x1 "Buzzkill"

In 5x1, Eddie had a panic attack because he was trying to stick it out with Ana for Chris' sake and in 8x1, he was frustrated with the fact that his mother was actively keeping Chris away from him while she literally talked about having a swimming pool installed in their backyard. Eddie was still in L.A. and he did his best to celebrate Chris' birthday via FaceTime. Yes, the whole "find Chris a mom or I'll be his mom" is still happening with Helena and it's been going on since Eddie left the Army.

5x6 "Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1" vs. 8x6 "Confessions"

In 5x6, Eddie and Buck were held hostage by two escaped convicts, Mitchell and Dom and after Eddie suggested Buck exit the ambulance, he worked with Mitchell and created a plan so that Mitchell could donate his heart to his own son. It's three years later and in 8x6, following Halloween, Eddie felt even more disconnected from his own son since he was getting information about Chris from his mother and they weren't sharing much about how Chris was thriving. He spoke with a priest and was told to allow himself to find joy.

5x10 "Wrapped in Red" vs 8x10 "Voices"

In 5x10, Eddie quit the 118 because Chris said he could be dead next year. Eddie quit the 118 again in 8x10 and it was for Chris this time too but he left L.A. and moved back to El Paso, which is the city he left to build a better life for them.

5x12 "Boston" vs. 8x12 "Disconnected"

In 5x12, Maddie was in Boston and after spending six months on the road, Chimney found her. In 8x12, Eddie will be in El Paso (Maddie and Eddie parallels) and based on the synopsis, he'll be struggling to find work which will cause other problems. Reminder, Eddie was working three jobs to provide for Chris after he was honorably discharged from the Army once Shannon left them.

5x13 "Fear O Phobia" vs. 8x13 "Invisible"

Eddie had his mental breakdown in 5x13 and since the title of 8x13 is "Invisible", it's possible he'll be mentally struggling again since Chris will still be living with Eddie's parents and he may not have found a job by then.

5x14 "Dumb Luck" vs. 8x14 "Sick Day"

In 5x14, Buck was there for both Eddie and Chris while Eddie recovered from his mental breakdown and he took them to Equine Therapy so that Chris could ride a horse while he talked to Eddie about Charlie, the boy they saved in 4x13 before Eddie was shot. Since the synopsis for 8x14 hasn't been released yet, it's unclear how it will or could apply to Eddie (if he's even in the episode because the stills and BTS pictures haven't shown him on set).

If the pattern continues then it's certainly possible that Eddie won't return to the 118 until 8x18 just like he didn't return in season 5 until episode 18 which was titled "Starting Over." Hopefully, he'll be back in L.A. before that but he may not be working at the 118 until the end of the season.

Since OS mentioned Buck's professional and personal life will change over the next few episodes, anything's possible. Also, RG mentioned in an interview that he would like it if some of Eddie's family in El Paso moved to L.A. (Hopefully, it won't be his parents.)

These appear to be comments that illustrate some of the massive changes that are about to take place on the show for both characters and I think it'll be interesting to see how they'll play out.

One of the funniest things about this episode was Ravi cleaning the glass by himself because it's clearly a one man job but Buck and Eddie don't know the concept of one man job because wdym, of course every activity includes the other

I am just now realising that Buck was the one who brought up being in love with Eddie. All Tommy said was that he saw Eddie as competition, which could have meant a lot of things… he could have just been referring to competing for Buck’s attention or even to imply that Buck liked Eddie. They didn’t even touch on the subject of being in love with each other before their break-up. Tommy never said anything about love!!

So where did you get IN LOVE from Buck??? That’s all you bud, there is no everyone!!

Both T.K.'s waited until Eddie Diaz was out of the picture before they tried to get with Buck!

T.K. 1.0 waited until Eddie was shot before she made her move and Buck was vulnerable over Eddie almost dying.

T.K. 2.0 waited to try again with Buck after Eddie was more than 800 miles away and once again, Buck was vulnerable because he’s missing Eddie and Chris.

They're both trashy.

It's always been Eddie!

tim you will never make me ship tommy with buck i know the truth
