Taking a brief pause in Nessian hating to talk about the last chapter of ACOSF where SJM implies a child needs to earn the love of a parent:

She searched for the words, for any explanation or apology, but none came…
Her father had died for her, with love in his heart, and though she might not have deserved it then ... She would do all she could now to earn it. To deserve not just his love, but that of those around her. Of Cassian.

A whole book of making her grovel and apologize to people who didn’t deserve it and for her to STILL feel like she needs to do more to “earn” their love? She almost died multiple times helping them even BEFORE ACOSF. She gave up her powers not just for Feyre but for Rhys. What more do they want from her? This is deeply unserious in general but to end your book on this note is unforgivable.

Why the fuck is Nesta talking about “earning” the love of a neglectful father who is actually the one responsible for the crime of “letting Feyre hunt” that she is punished for by the IC?

And actually ykw going back to Nessian hating for a second, Cassian has done absolutely nothing to earn her love despite what Nesta and SJM may believe. I’m trying not to psychoanalyze SJM for all this but it’s kinda hard not to!

“rhysand + ic have EVERY RIGHT to NEVER forgive Nesta for letting Feyre go out provide for their family at fourteen” please. look at hewn city. rhysand and the ic are literally the reigning champions of watching little girls suffer and not doing a thing to help them. so if anything it really should have been a bonding moment.

Need a NASA scientist to immediately explain to me why feysand feel the need to fall over themselves to constantly explain that actually they have the most trauma ™️ and no one else can relate to or understand them because they're so special and broken and edgy and have been through so much™️.

Like it's so cringey. They're standing in tarquin's court that he hasn't finished rebuilding and plotting to steal his shit while feysand hasn't rebuilt a goddammit thing and have been going drinking and having dinner together but they're talking about how people like tarquin will never understand how hard rhysand has it because "there won't be a target on his back or his kid's back because the summer court is neutral"

??????

WHAT TARGET? NEUTRAL IN WHAT??? THE ARAMANTHA THING? SHE'S DEAD HOW WOULD SHE TARGET THEM. THE WAR FROM 500 YEARS AGO?? HYBERN IS COMING FOR ALL OF THEM NOW SO THEY ALL HAVE TARGETS ON THEIR BACK???

Sjm will go out of her way to mention that rhys has a target on his back (why or from who is apparently not important) and he is always afraid and then be like but actually rhys has UNTOLD amounts of GODLY power the likes of which prythian OR the mortal realm has NEVER seen before.

Like which is it, is he being hunted or is he sonic.exe?

I don’t think other parts of this fandom quite understand … Nesta stans get so defensive and are screaming her rights and what she deserves from the rooftop because no one in the actual book is going to do it.

Rhys gets hard on himself and the internal monologue of every character in existence reminds us he’s such a good person and it’s really not a big deal that he killed all those people or drugged Feyre and made her dance naked and twisted her bone because he had a reason so it’s totally fine and he deserves instant forgiveness and worship!!

Feyre gets hard on herself and every character in the series jumps over themselves to say my precious Angel baby darling you have never done a single thing wrong in your whole life!! So what a whole Court got destroyed you were just in a silly goofy mood!! You meant the best! You were wronged and revenge is rightfully yours to take!!

Nesta gets hard on herself and every character in the books including her own mate says yes thank you for recognizing that you are awful and mean and insufferable for saying you don’t like Mor’s dress and like … glaring at people? Don’t you know drinking excessively and having sex is only ok when you do it with a sexy grin??? To the dungeons with you I do believe!!

reblog if you’ve read fanfictions that are more professional, better written than some actual novels. I’m trying to see something

ad infinitum

A teenage girl enters her father’s office, dreading the news she was raised her whole life to anticipate. She’s being married off to some influential noble. Her father will make new connections through her marriage. Her mother’s in charge of the wedding, tradition states. It’s a lovely cycle.

Her dress is quite pretty. Night Court black in silk, silver gems sewn onto the bodice and train of her veil, as well as the matching gloves. They’re what she imagines stars look like. Closest she’ll ever get to seeing them.

Her father-in-law makes a crude joke, his son will rip her stars away tonight. She wants to run. She doesn’t. Remembers what happens to girls who run, who disobey. There are no High Lords in her bloodline.

The wedding’s over. She has a new home. Night’s come. Her mother said to think happy thoughts. It’s over. He wasn’t all that rough, she supposes. It could’ve been worse. She prays to the Mother that once was enough. It wasn’t. A second night. Then a third, then a fourth, then a fifth, then a sixth, a seventh, an eighth. Nothing.

Her husband’s frustrated. He’s taken a mistress. The whole household knows. She says nothing.

A decade passes. The mistress has two children. She remains childless. Her bed remains empty. She’s glad for it.

Two decades. The mistress is dead. Her husband killed her in a fit of rage. She never sees those two children again either.

Her husband starts visiting her again. It hurts. She thinks happy thoughts. She’s pregnant, hopes it’s a boy. Women can’t inherit.

Ten months. An uneventful birth. It’s a girl.

Three decades pass. She has a son now. She’s planning a wedding. Her daughter’s lucky, she thinks. Her future son-in-law is only 387. Not all that old. She’ll attend a wedding soon enough, help her daughter plan it.

It’s a lovely cycle.

Whatever you do, don’t imagine Gwyn opening Azriel’s gift.

Don’t imagine her lifting the delicate necklace out of its box and bringing the rose pendant close to her eyes to better examine the intricacies of its design.

Whatever you do, don’t think about the gentle smile that curves her lips, not because the gentle glow of the candle-flame is sending fissures of color refracting off the stained glass petals, but because she detects the subtlest hint of night mist and cedar coming from the necklace — emanating from the gift box.

Don’t imagine her closing her fist around the pendant and patiently waiting for the bond to snap for Azriel too.

Don’t imagine the gentle hum she sends channeling down that tether, still translucent as the fickle pieces of fate have yet to fall into place.

But most of all, don’t imagine the slight smile Azriel erases as somehow, the scene unfolds before his very eyes. As a timid spark flares to life in his chest. As he dismisses the oh so vivid details that seem to harmonize with the song of his shadows, singing a melody he can’t quite decipher.

Oh, but what sweet music it is all the same.

Such sweet secret music. Secret, lovely and beautiful.

The Bargain (ao3)

People whisper about the god that lives in the forest, that grants wishes to the desolate and the desperate, but when Nesta Archeron takes it upon herself to enter the forest and ask the god to save her family, she gets much more than she bargained for. (For @cassianappreciationweek day 4)

In the darkness, something cracked.

Something snapped beneath her feet, and in the thin shafts of moonlight that broke through the stretching, reaching branches of the trees overhead, she caught sight of the forest floor, littered with sticks and stones— with things that glowed white, luminescent in the dark. Things that might have been teeth, might have been bones.

A shiver crawled down her spine, a cold touch that was light and terrible and enough to make her shudder. There was another crack, another splinter in the silence, and somehow the forest seemed to grow denser, the woods pressing in on all sides. The darkness was a shroud, thick and cloying and almost impenetrable, and yet still Nesta walked— one determined foot in front of another. The branches caught on her cloak as she went, like aged and crooked fingers— snatching, grasping, hungry.

Still— she walked, her stomach aching with hunger and her bones aching with cold. In her hand she clutched her mother’s iron pendant so hard it left marks in the soft skin of her palm, its bite a reminder, a warning. She hoped it would protect her— hoped it would save her. As she took each misbegotten step, inching her way deeper and deeper into the dark swell of trees where only the truly desperate dared venture, she recited her mother’s old warnings, too.

Always wear iron, Mama had said when Nesta was young. Hang rowan by the door. Never enter into a bargain with a stranger, and remember— the fae can’t lie.

Happy last half hour of mermay! Here is part one for this!

Summary:  There is something in the water.  Something great and terrible that seeks to lure the living to their deaths.  Haunted by the image and voice of one such creature, Cassian will not rest until he finds it again.

Warnings: mild violence, near drownings. ~4.5k words

If we can ignore my poorly made collage/banner that’d be great too.

The Lady in the Water, A Beginning

The cabin boy stared out over the black sea as the gentle beat of waves lapped the hull of the ship. A cool breeze rolled through the sails causing the canvas to whap and the rigging to beat together.  They weren’t due for a storm for at least another day or two but if the wind continued in its relentless assault, the boy wouldn’t be surprised if a squall passed their way.

Anonymous asked:

hi! what do u think of the statement “rhys made nesta’s trauma all about him”?

hey anon!

i could not agree more with that statement because it is true.

as i’ve said before and will continue to say, idc if nesta wasn’t responding to the ic’s previous attempts (whatever those “attempts” were) to help her—that intervention was disgusting and humiliating and violating, full stop. they were wrong for that and they will never not be, no matter how much you try to reason that it helped her in the end (though did it really?), that they only did it out of love, that nesta wasn’t actually a prisoner, and whatever other shitty justifications you might whip out.

do i understand and believe that feyre truly wanted to help her sister? yes. do i think she was right to take action? also yes. the problem is that the intervention and all the plans and conversations surrounding nesta’s suffering and healing somehow center around r/hys—‘r/hys’s money funds nesta’s wild nights out, r/hys’s mate is hurting and therefore r/hys is hurting, r/hys’s reputation and public image are being harmed by nesta because he’s connected to her’, etc etc.

there’s canonical evidence that nesta & r/hys do not get along. there’s evidence he does not consider her a loved one, nor does he have her best interests at heart. it’s quite clear he (just barely) tolerates nesta because she’s feyre’s sister, and even then he’s not afraid to talk shit about her to anyone who’ll listen, his mate included.

so why oh why is r/hysand the one deciding how they go about helping nesta when it’s clear he couldn’t care less about her? why does everyone agree with r/hysand’s plan? why does he even get to have one in the first place?

feyre & elain are nesta’s sisters. feyre & elain know her best. no one else should have any say in the matter of supporting her through this difficult time but those two. (i would have included amren here had sarah not tried and failed to give nesta a strong friendship pre-acosf, but alas this was not the case so amren, just like r/hysand and cassian, should not have had anything to do with her intervention.)

and the thing is, that’s really the most feyre & elain can offer—support. that’s all we can offer any of our loved ones when they are hurting. you can’t force someone to get better. you can only encourage them and do what you can to help them along their healing journey—that’s vastly different from deciding what their healing journey will be and how long it will take and where it will occur, which is exactly what r/hysand did. isolating someone in a house they essentially cannot leave and making them train while physically weak with a man they explicitly said they did not want to be around does not = support. it’s been said before and i’ll say it again: that’s abusive behavior.

it’s just baffling to me how sarah janet really thought this was the best route for nesta’s story. it’s like she wanted to write a book with ‘forced proximity, sexual tension, angst, enemies to lovers’ tropes and then remembered that her characters are actually kinda super mentally & emotionally unstable and addressed it in a way where she could still hit all the tropes while her characters had watered down healing arcs that took a backseat to all the smut.

yk what she could have done? she could have had feyre & elain encourage nesta to stay with the priestesses, and nesta would decide to go of her own free will to show she was taking the first step in her healing process, and there she would meet gwyn and later on emerie, and the rest would go from there. she could have had nesta make the decision herself to stay in the HoW but make a bargain with feyre to work & train so she has a normal routine, and everything would go from there. she could have had nesta just a) not been subjected to the way r/hysand wanted her to suffer under the guise of it being For Her Own Good™️ (what déjà vu, right?), and b) not been given a timeline for her healing, and sarah still would have gotten the same storyline and ending she wanted in the first place. i literally would not be sitting here shitting on one of her books for the thousandth time if that’s what she’d done.

but she didn’t, so here i am.

Sunflower: Part II | Elucien Drabble

You can find Part I here

Word Count: 1.8k

Note: Lucien sucks at gardening and Elain realises some things about their bond. Hope you enjoy!

It had been two weeks.

Two weeks since she’d last seen him.

Her…mate, she supposed. After their last meeting, right before he’d left, Elain had been slowly growing more accustomed to the word. No longer did it make her chest tighten with fear; no longer did it make her feel confined. What it truly meant to her, though, she still was not quite sure.

She brought her hand to her chest, as if to ensure their bond was still in place. That golden thread had become a lifeline, a companion for when Feyre’s home, though spacious and perfectly lovely, would become too dark and foreign. For when the Inner Circle felt more like her family than Elain’s, too oblivious to who Elain truly was and what she truly needed.

She sighed in relief when she felt a gentle tug on her chest. The bond was there, gleaming with golden light, making her feel less…alone.

“Elain?” Feyre’s voice sounded from the corridor.
