I assume you've maybe driven through this obscure little coastal town, you've probably never heard of it, 'Boston' once or twice while on Route 1 (best highway)
You might not have seen or noticed it because of the tunnel
oh yeah there was a cumbies

My adaptation of the God of Arepo short story, which was originally up at ShortBox Comics Fair for charity. You can get a copy of the DRM-free ebook here for free - and I'd encourage you to donate to Mighty Writers or The Ministry of Stories in exchange.
Again it's an honour to be drawing one of my favourite short stories ever. Thank you so much for the original authors for creating this story; and for everyone who bought a copy and donated to the above non-profits.
It never gets old and it always makes me cry.
If you're a writer you're supposed to write a lot of bullshit. It's part of the gig. You have to write a lot of absolute garbage in order to get to the good bits. Every once in a while you'll be like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time writing bullshit," but that's dumb. That's exactly the same as an Olympic runner being like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time running all those practice laps"
If you wanna learn how to draw hands, you have to make a bunch of crappy drawings of hands. You have to look at hands and think about them all the time, be pathologically obsessed with them, even when you're not drawing. You'll probably have a sketchbook full of shitty sketches of hands, perhaps not even because you're working on a specific drawing, but because you're trying to understand this thing called a hand. Hundreds of throwaway drawings that have no purpose, except to be drawn. So go write something shit. Just to write it.
never forget the universal rule of the order of things: People Will Not Read It
signs at stores? émail? menu ?? instruction ? post online ? caption with andswer to question ? group hand outs ??? street sign ??? no. The Written Word Is The Enemy
The ability to occasionally Read A Thing will make you a hero in your workplace, especially if it is for example an error message that tells you what you need to do differently, or instructions on unjamming a printer.
how dare you say we put jam in the printer
A friend of mine who shall remain nameless works on a science conference in the US annually that usually gets about 1000 to 2000 international visitors. This year, they've had less than two dozen registrations from outside the US.
were I to create an original piece of media I would create bait so queer in order to create a fanfic environment I like. I find you guys do your best work under duress.
I’d say “jeez can two people not be friends anymore?” and then I’d give one of them amnesia in which they only recognize the other above anyone else
ooh i have a nice fun fact!
Static was WILDLY popular in Brazil (a country where the population is over 50% black) and we had re-runs for YEARS on open television. Everyone who was a kid in the 2000s knew and loved him. As a result, every single Brazilian Con has a LOT of static cosplayers!
So, a couple of years ago, Comic Con Experience (the biggest con in Brazil, which is actually also the biggest con in the world!) invited one of Static’s creator Denys Cowan as one of the guests of honor.
Now. Thousands of people attend his panel. And cosplayers went NUTS because they could show their Static cosplay to the creator himself! What none of us expected was Debts Cowan’s reaction:
He cried on stage.
He had never seen Static cosplayers - especially not so many of them! And he had no idea the show was popular here! No one ever told him his character was so beloved! Years and years of reruns and he had no idea! He obviously created the character with his experiences and his community (Black North Americans) in mind. Still, he accidentally touched a whole other community of black people who could see themselves on the screen as a superhero!
Anyway he is a lovely person and one of the best, most memorable guests we had. And I think this is a nice reminder that your art might touch people you can’t even imagine would when creating it.
Edit: I said “the creator” when i should’ve said “one of the creators”, its edited now, but while he isnt the one who came to brazil it’s important to say Dwayne McDuffie was another important figure to static shock!! Both are black men who paved the way in comic book history! Thank you @sokumotanaka for pointing it out.
We literally cannot let them start charging 80 dollars for video games 70 dollars was already outrageous 60 was pushing it. 80 fucking dollars. ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR DAMN MIND. For MARIO?!?!?!?!?
middle aged lady on my bus just called someone's partner "your whimsical idiot boyfriend" over the phone . with sincere frustration might I add
Thinking about a DS9 version of Voyager, that happened a few years later (late s4?), only they sent the Defiant along with Voyager to find Chakotay's crew. Mostly because I think it's really hard sometimes to think about what the Voyager crew lost/left behind in those seven years, whereas we know the families and friends of the Niners.
This is just a bunch of assorted floating character thoughts, really...
Maybe Sisko got Kasidy brought along instead of/as well as Tom Paris as a "Maquis expert" - but Jake definitely wouldn't be there. And the last time he saw his father, Joseph was having heart troubles, so there'd always be that question if if he'd even get to see his father again...
Miles of course is worrying about Keiko, who's pregnant, and Molly. Or maybe Kira's pregnant at this point... It would be interesting to have had Kira as the Maquis agent rather than Tuvok, but would also be interesting to see the pov of Kira who'd been left in charge of DS9 as she fairly often is on Starfleet things like this, and how they adapt on the station to losing most of their senior command crew.
Odo's almost definitely still on the station. He takes any feelings he totally denies having on Quark.
Hmmm, if we squeezed this into early season 5, we could have Nog going along as one of his first missions. Him and Jake barely get a chance to start arguing about living together before he's disappeared. Quark takes out any feelings he might have about this on Odo. And the new Starfleet commander, naturally.
If we're getting Nog, then Julian's already broken up with Leeta. (Sidenote - will she and Rom still get together, with Rom missing his son?) But Julian'll be missing Garak, who vice-versa misses him. (Sorry Garak, there's no way you were let in on this one.) I wonder if after a few years, when they feel really far away from the Federation, Julian would tell the crew about his enhancements? Or if it would be forced out in some incident?
Jadzia and Worf would all be fairly alright? There'd be the added no-trill-to-host-Dax-if-Jadzia-dies concern. And oooh, I can really imagine there being a massive conflict/solidarity love/hate relationship between B'Elanna and Worf...
To give enough room for everyone, I think the Defiant should remain intact, with Sisko as captain, and Worf as his XO. I think those two would be the only permanent fixtures though, as Janeway would insist they all act as functionally one crew and have a rota shifting the crew across the two ships.
Sisko would have a far harder time accepting the Maquis as officers though - while he'd have agreed with Janeway to work with them against the Caretaker, his personal negative feelings around Calvin and Kasidy and Eddington would not make him so agreeable to accepting them as crew for the long-term. I feel like he'd be more chill with the ones who'd never been in Starfleet, but Janeway's decision to have Chakotay as XO in particular he'd really push against. (Although, if Sisko could push past that all, it would then be a beautiful friendship imo - he and Chakotay are very similar people, I think.Maybe it turns out Chakotay knew and disliked Eddington, and they start to bond over that?)
Miles and B'Elanna would work well together, I think. He'd treat her fairly and respect what she could do - honestly, I think he'd be very happy to have someone that competent to rely on as his second. I think he'd be the first to ask Sisko to give B'Elanna an official Starfleet role of some description. I'd it possible to have a Chief of Ops on a starship? Maybe Miles suggests that he keeps that role and is responsible for the entire running of the ship, but B'Elanna's in charge of the engine room or something? I want to give her her well-earned seniority 😭
Julian and the EMH would be super interesting to see. Voyager's medbay would be used for both ships, and Janeway would want him there as CMO. Hmmm, although, maybe he could be incapacitated when the ships are pulled through and the EMH does still have to take over... maybe even in a long-lasting way - losing a hand, or something? - that means he has to rely on the EMH? Either they'd be firm friends or wouldn't be able to stand each other, but I think they'd play off each other really well, just spouting medical theories at each other without missing a beat. Although, Julian might soon realise he can't allow himself to get too carried away, because while it's a delight that the EMH can keep up with him, *he* shouldn't be able to keep up with the EMH in terms of quoting textbooks word-for-word etc.
(I can't not mention the potential Harry/Julian/Tom/B'Elanna mess? They all make each other worse...)
I'd like to see Kasidy getting on with Neelix and Kes, feeling a bit on the outside. She'd be able to bring her diplomatic skills to the table - maybe internally at first, helping to smooth Maquis-Starfleet tensions? But it wouldn't be easy for her, as a captain, serving under either Janeway or Ben on their ships, I don't think. I think she and Kes could have a really lovely friendship though.
Sisko would, at the very least, love Neelix's idea of a kitchen and try to get involved in cooking something as often as he could. And the whole crew would conspire to make this happen because 1. It makes Sisko happy and 2. They get fed much better on the days he's in charge XD
There's definitely way more to explore here but I need to go and make lunch and I'm trying not to grow my draft box too much again, so hey, have some random food for thought!
Ooh, I love this! It sure was awkward for Janeway to be separated from her fiancé for seven years (and return to find he'd moved on) but we were never invested in them as a couple. Miles and Keiko though? Bring this man home!! (I would not hold it against you for one second if you moved on, though, Keiko--you gotta take care of yourself!)
Julian is only outed as an augment later in the series, when Zimmerman is working on a new EMH inspired by Voyager's Doctor, so Julian's status would still be concealed in this timeline. What if the EMH were the one to work out that Julian is an augment this time? Would he be sympathetic, as one whose personhood/right to exist is questioned? If it occurs early in the timeline, perhaps the discovery would short-circuit his medical ethics programming, speeding up his character development--augmenting human DNA is wrong, but imprisoning/expelling one of only two doctors on a stranded vessel in the Delta Quadrant would endanger the health of the crew! And you say your parents had medical procedures performed on you without your consent?!
(maybe I just want one person to support Julian instead of vilifying augments, is that too much to ask?)
And of course, Julian projecting his need-to-fix-everything onto former Borg drone Seven of Nine...you know he'd be pushing her to remove her implants, act more human, mask. Until he realizes she's actually happy the way she is, and doesn't feel the need to pretend to be normal just to be accepted. Sounds nice, doesn't it, Julian?
(come to think of it, a lot of the crew--particularly Sisko--will probably have some Feelings about having a Borg crew member)
O'Brien and B'Elanna would be a great dynamic, but I think there's a lot of potential for B'Elanna and Nog as well. Worf's too much of an uptight weirdo to really connect with Nog, but I think B'Elanna and Nog would have something to bond over as people who weren't "supposed" to be in Starfleet (Klingon, Ferengi). Maybe not at first (B'Elanna can be rather standoffish, after all) but I think they'd warm up to each other as she's won over by Nog's earnestness and skill. They'd also have very different perspectives on being from "outsider" cultures--B'Elanna growing up part-Klingon among humans, and Nog growing up Ferengi on a primarily Bajoran station. Nog is fiercely proud of his Ferengi heritage, even if other species don't necessarily "get" the profit-motivated philosophy, and I wonder if seeing that would make B'Elanna reconsider her relationship to her Klingon heritage and her internalized anti-Klingon sentiment.
If the MBTA were truly woke it would have a rainbow line that goes to Northampton and Provincetown and the trains would be trainsgender.
Yeah a worcester line college connector and a tip of the cape extension of the flyer would both be fantastic
There already kind of IS a worcester line college connector. Our friends at the PVTA run the B79, which is a shuttle bus expressly meant to connect UMass Amherst students to Boston via the Worcester line, stopping at union station at intervals that coincide with certain runs of that train.
It's not Northampton but it IS in the 5 college area. Which I think counts enough.
Die temu ad die
Hmm. Accidentally looks like latin.
It accidentally is latin
Accidental latin is my new favourite thing.
Found this in the margins of a medieval manuscript.
Hmmm. My translation would be:
This isn't Latin, it's nonsense, I'm afraid!
If you don't use Wiktionary, this isn't just saying that there's no root Latin word "temu", but that there's no conjugation or declension that would ever make the letters "temu" come together with meaning in Latin!
It's so close to timuī ('I was afraid', conjugated from timeo), which I can only assume is where google translate is pulling the word 'fear' from?? (besides out of their ass, that is)
