I love thinking about Viago when a Rook de Riva is lost in the Fade. Because beyond the fear of having lost them for good, imagine the guilt. He set them on that path. He sent them after Solas.

And yes, he did it to protect them from whatever punishment the other Talons would have meted out, and of course he didn’t know that Rook would end up in charge. He didn’t know that instead of the remnants of the Inquisition (a professional fighting force that had been operating for a decade), Rook would be relying on a cobbled-together band that had to learn to operate as a team on the fly. He didn’t know that Rook would be fighting blight and dragons and blighted dragons and two immortal sadists.

But none of that matters. Because Rook is gone. He spent so much of his life keeping everyone around him at a distance. It took Teia ten years to get his gloves off. He can count the number of people he has allowed close to him on one hand and have fingers left over.

And Rook is gone. His Rook. His fledgling. The one every other Crow knows is his favorite. The one he worries about. The one that he writes to when they are away, even if it’s just to call them an idiot. The one that he threatens to drag out of the Fade himself if they fall. But when that moment comes, he is helpless. He cannot actually storm the Fade. He cannot stab it or poison it.

Rook is gone. And it is all his fault.
