best version of classic varia go (m2/super/SA-X/smash 64/smash melee/samus n' joey, prime 1, zm/smash brawl, prime 2/hunters/3, other m/smash 4, smash ultimate (it just barely changes enough to qualify as its own iteration), sr, or dread's flashback to the fusion flashback. to avoid recency bias prime 4 varia is excluded)

OOOHHH good question. really curious about everyone else's thoughts too =]

These are excellent suit design thoughts! Here's mine.

I may as well give my thoughts because I put way too much thought into the various varia variations. I must warn you that my opinions are cursed and I will harp on really minor stuff that probably doesn't matter way too much. This is because I am a Sonic fan

My favorite thing about other m is all the times it accidentally answered questions nobody in the world was asking

Why come Samus no have Gravity at the start of Fusion even though the whole conceit of the SA-X is that it's you at full power? Because she turned it into the Gravity Feature (which also has implications for why Gravity disappeared so much in past titles)

By not using the fucking beautiful Zero Mission-esque Power Suit model that they just had for a single flashback cutscene and instead using yellow varia and saying "oh uh it's because legendary power suit" they instead gave a reason for prime 1 power to just have orange pauldrons for no reason, it's because that's what base power looks like with the legendary power suit, something SR then sets in stone by also doing it

There's also the really funny bits of accidental Prime consistency despite this being around when they tried decanonizing them like having the Seeker Missiles return or my favorite useless detail from Prime 2, the unused bottom hatch on the Gunship

ALL OF THIS LMAOOOO. My personal favorite “burning question answered by Other M!!!” is Why Does Samus Do 👍?? like. do we really actually need a backstory behind giving a thumbs up. do we really

^^Me when I tell the teacher BAD morning 🐺⛓️🥀💔

Gawdddd you really can tell they were trying to cram as many ideas into this game as possible. And that they wanted it to be a movie

It was 110% not the intent to solve weird lore questions nobody asked by making the gravity suit a glowy aura. This burning lore question or whatever was answered by sheer accident, which is the funny part.

The whole yellow varia thing is dumb as all hell, but if you take the actual design part out of it and just look at the "The Legendary Power Suit's base appearance is different from the original Power Suit seen in Zero Mission" part of it, it... actually does have precedent with current titles in mind; the Power Suit's only appearances in the timeline after ZM and before Other M are in Prime 1, where it has orange shoulders, Samus Returns, where it has orange shoulders, and Super Metroid, which came out before the concept of orange shoulders on the Power Suit existed.

adam's plan was just... generally stupid on all possible fronts? Like oh gee, run headfirst into the dangerous sector filled with unfreezable metroids like that wouldn't just fail the instant one of them grabs him because he can't morph ball and drop bombs, and then die in the explosion when the sector detaches. Metroids don't have eyes which means thry use other means to detect prey which means stealth is less than worthless.

Samus has fought countless metroids and knows how to dodge the fuckers. Samus has a comical amount of experience in the very specific field of compromising a location and escaping said location as it is actively collapsing before she gets caught in its blaze of glory. Samus does not instantly die if grabbed by a metroid. but no gotta go in yourself knowing full well you'll die regardless of what you do because ???

I KNOWWWWW RIGHT like genuinely what even was his thinking there. that and The Scene We Do Not Speak Of are like the culmination of bad writing in OM to me. like not only is the plan HORRIBLE but oh my god the SETUP for this scene gets me so bad it's like. la di da i'm adam and i'm going to stop samus (aka the famous metroid slayer) from entering sector zero where there's metroids ^.^ but uh oh!!! there's a metroid approaching her!! do i:

a) get her attention to warn her

b) shoot the metroid (WHICH HE LITERALLY DOES AFTERWARDS...??)

c) grab her and leave to figure something out

nope!! ^.^ I think i will choose option d) shoot samus. which will incapacitate her completely even so far as deactivating her suit (<WHAT KIND OF GUN IS HE CARRYING....???) and render her fully unconscious!!! leaving the metroid free to just!!!!! attack her!!! i guess!!!

AND YEAH. LIKE YOU SAID. THE PLAN ITSELF BROTHER WHAT. it actually makes me so dead how both OM and Fusion set up Adam as this unrivaled military mastermind that samus respects Deeply and then like ALL of his decisions in OM are incomprehensibly stupid like this. Adam my sweetest sugarplum why are you unauthorizing all of samus' extremely useful abilities. I can understand prohibiting power bombs but the gravity feature??? The grapple beam?? The VARIA SUIT???????

I prefer to imagine that Adam just fucking missed his first shot, accidentally hitting Samus, and then completely refused to admit it because how the fuck do you explain that, he's a decorated federation soldier and he misses the easiest shot in the world now of all times

I rly loved that climactic battle in Kirby and the forgotten land where Kirby and Fecto Elfilis face off at the top of the building in a duel where Bandee and Elfilin‘s souls are tied to Kirby and Elfilis’ life points respectively and Kirby/Bandee figure out at the last moment how to switch Elfilin and Elfilis’ places to banish Fecto Elfilis to the shadow realm forever

Unrelated I also really enjoyed the scene at the end of Yugioh Battle City where Yugi and Marik drive a semi truck straight into Yami Marik and isekais the fucking shit out of him

people loved this on twitter so I’m porting it over here. the first picture is the lrt.

ARE YOU SERIOUS???

YEAH Team Kirby Clash released April 12 2017; Easter 2017 was April 16, the very first Magolor Day (or as some would call it, Sunday) after release. He may have died for his sins but now he is risen and all that

Metroid Fusion (2002)

Metroid Fusion is a 2002 horror-themed action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance.
While on a mission to the Metroids’ home planet, bounty hunter Samus Aran is attacked by a deadly parasite. Cured by Metroid DNA, Samus is bestowed with unique new powers from her old adversary, but must face a new enemy: the ‘X’ parasite.

Oh hey since it's right there lemme point out something really neat

Look at Samus (yeah technically it's the SA-X but for all intents and purposes the suit is literally the M2/Super varia suit so let's just pretend that's Samus) in this image

See those round patterns on the front of the pauldrons? Those actually connect to the lines going down her arms, creating a bigger pattern that ties them together. It shows up on all other interpretations of (specifically) the Super varia suit, including the one from Dread's intro:

See? S'pretty neat.

By the way none of the Prime suits have this. Just completely ditched.

So after ditching one of the pauldrons' main design features there was suddenly too much blank space on the front, so to fix it they decided to just... make a divot in the center of the pauldrons. I guess. Because why not.

house plays both zero mission & prime hunters in season 1 which can only lead me to believe he’s a hardcore metroid fan. thank you for your time.
