Niinistö addresses Arctic issues at Munich Security Conference

President Sauli Niinistö will be making the opening statement on Arctic security issues at a gathering of 500 foreign and security policy decision-makers from around the world.

Finland's President Sauli Niinistö is in Munich for the International Security Conference (MSC) which is being held through Sunday. 

The Munich Security Conference, which has been held since 1963, this year brings together almost 500 key foreign and security policy decision-makers from around the world. 

The conference agenda is focused in particular on the role of the European Union as a global actor and its relations with Russia and the United States. In addition, the conflicts in the Middle East, the political developments in the Sahel region and arms control issues will also be topics for discussion.

Today, Saturday, President Niinistö's schedule includes participation in the MSC Arctic Security Roundtable , where he will make the opening statement in the panel discussion. Finland currently holds the chairmanship of the Arctic Council. 

During the conference, President Niinistö will also have bilateral meetings with, among others, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. 

President Niinistö traveled to Munich from Vilnius, where on Friday he attended the Centennial Celebration of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania.
