A serious road accident involving a truck and two passenger cars on Highway 3 in Parkano, about 80 km north of Tampere, has left at least two people dead and two seriously injured, police said on Thursday.
The accident took place at the intersection of Tampereentie and Tampereenkatu on Thursday morning.
Police suspect that the truck driving in the direction of Parkano collided with a car making a left turn, drifted into oncoming traffic and crashed into another car.
Police have launched a preliminary investigation into the matter.
The incident led to severe traffic congestion on the highway and motorists were directed to take detours. Authorities were alerted to the accident at around 11 am.
Four road deaths overnight

One person died in a traffic accident in Karkkila, Western Uusimaa sometime around midnight, when a car drifted into the oncoming lane and hit a grocery truck, according to the rescue department.
The car caught fire in the collision and its driver died at the scene. The accident led to traffic congestion for a few hours.
In Kokemäki, Satakunta, two people died in a motorcycle and bicycle collision on Wednesday night.
Police suspect that a 35-year-old motorcyclist was travelling at a high speed when he crashed into a 72-year-old cyclist, killing both.
In Lahti, a middle-aged man died in a motorcycle accident when he lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a lamppost, the Häme Police Department said in a press release late Wednesday.
Railway accident in Tampere
A person was killed by a train in Tampere on Thursday morning.
According to the Central Finland Police Department, the accident occurred at the Tampere railway station. Police are currently investigating the cause of death.
Train traffic came to a halt for a short while after the incident. However, Finnish state railway firm VR confirmed that the accident has not affected train schedules.
