Finnish state rail operator VR will not open passenger train traffic to Russia during the men's Euro2020 football championship owing to the coronavirus situation.

VR's Allegro trains run to Russia via the Vainikkala border station in Lappeenranta, which remains closed to passenger trains.

Passenger train traffic to Russia has been suspended since March 2020, and Russia's land border is generally closed to passenger traffic.

VR is however preparing to transport the Finnish national team to St. Petersburg on a private train. It has applied for a crossing permit from border authorities.

In St. Petersburg, the Finnish team is scheduled to play against Russia on 16 June and against Belgium on 21 June.

The Finnish government recommends avoiding travel to Russia.

Last week the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) urged fans to watch the matches from home, including the Finnish men's team's first appearance against Denmark on 12 June in Copenhagen.
