Antti Kurvinen, the Centre Party's parliamentary group chair, will move into the role of science and culture minister as party leader Annika Saarikko steps in as finance minister.

The newly-selected science and culture minister, a South Ostrobothnia native, said that he was an avid supporter of Finnish baseball and amateur theatre fan.

"Drama is close to my heart. There’s no two ways about it," he told reporters on Wednesday.

Kurvinen said Finland's arts and sports sectors were still going through some of the hardest times of the pandemic.

"Let's work together to rebuild [the sector] from the coronavirus ruins," he said.

Saarikko slides into Finance Ministry

Last weekend Saarikko announced she would be replacing her party colleague Finance Minister Matti Vanhanen.

The planned mid-term switch was agreed when Vanhanen took over the position from Katri Kulmuni, who resigned last summer after admitting she had used taxpayers' money to buy professional coaching services.

President Sauli Niinistö is scheduled to confirm Kurvinen's appointment on Thursday.
