Prosecutors in Helsinki have filed a manslaughter charge against a 16-year-old boy suspected of fatally stabbing a 24-year-old man at the city's central railway station in April.

According to previous information provided by police, the incident occurred after a fight involving about 10 individuals broke out.

Police have previously said that the fight was sparked by an individual waving a small bag around by its strap, prompting one of the people with the victim to say "don't wave that bag."

During the preliminary probe of the fatal incident, Helsinki police detective inspector Jukka Larkio told Yle that the violence that erupted was disproportionate to the situation.

Initially several minors were suspected of involvement but as the preliminary investigation progressed one clear suspect emerged and was taken into custody.

However, two minors who were allegedly at the scene have since been charged with assault as well as possession of a dangerous object or substance.

The teen's criminal trial is scheduled to commence on 1 July.
