Finns are starting to make their Midsummer pilgrimage to the countryside. There is still room on trains to northern Finland next week, but the busiest train services are starting to fill up, said state railways VR on Friday.

The busiest travel days are Thursday and Friday, 24-25 June, and the most popular return date is Sunday 27 June for traffic flowing back to the capital region.

Among the most booked-up trains are the afternoon Pendolino services from Helsinki to Kajaani and Oulu. The most popular Sunday return is the Pendolino leaving Oulu for Helsinki at 4pm.

The routes between Helsinki and Joensuu are also filling up fast.

Overnight trains to Kolari and Rovaniemi are almost at capacity for Midsummer, according to VR's communications manager, Janna Viisterä. However, for those wanting to take their car to Lapland, the IC 273 train passing through Oulu on Thursday still has some spaces available.
