Finnish troops to continue Afghanistan evacuation operations

The foreign affairs ministry said Finland would evacuate more than the 240 people the country pledged to previously.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto (Green) said that embassy staff members hired by Finland had been evacuated from Afghanistan along with members of their families.

As of Tuesday morning, Haavisto said Finland had facilitated the evacuation of more than 200 people from the country, noting that most of the evacuees were women and children.

He said that around 40 people of that number were members of the EU delegation in Kabul.

Haavisto concluded the tweet by saying that the operation would continue.

Meanwhile, the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) on Tuesday published photographs of troops assisting in the ongoing evacuation operation in Afghanistan.

The pictures also show Finnish troops on patrol along a fence at the airport, lined with people waiting to be evacuated, sitting and standing along a wall.

The Finnish troops arrived in Afghanistan on Saturday and got to work right away, according to the FDF. Finland's operations in the country are limited to Kabul airport and its immediate surroundings, the Defence Forces added.

Some of the Finnish soldiers have previously been deployed in Afghanistan on peacekeeping missions.
