The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) issued warnings for heavy rains across regions in southern and western Finland on Wednesday.

Some areas in the south could get up to 50mm of rain before it's over.

A low-pressure system will bring rain and strong winds to the regions of Uusimaa, Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme as well as Southwest Finland, FMI said.

The heavy rain could also cause local flooding, according to Yle meteorologist Nina Karusto.

The rain is expected to head eastward during the afternoon and evening, and will continue across southern, western and eastern areas, according to the forecast.

Strong winds are also expected throughout Wednesday, both at sea and on land. However, wind speeds are not likely to reach storm-level. Winds could reach 15 metres per second in western areas.

Karusto said that scattered showers will continue on Thursday, when it is expected to get a bit warmer as well.

Towards the weekend, due to an anticipated high-pressure system, the rainy, windy weather is expected to calm down with warmer temperatures and drier conditions.
