A third teenager convicted of murder by Helsinki District Court last week has expressed his dissatisfaction with the court's verdict, the first step towards appealing a sentence.

Earlier this week, the two other convicted teens also indicated that they were unhappy with the ruling.

The court had sentenced the three to prison sentences of ten years and one month, nine years and two months, and eight years and two months.

Expressing their dissatisfaction does not automatically mean that the convicted teenagers will appeal, but the dissatisfaction must be reported within 7 days of the verdict and an appeal must be filed within 30 days.

If they had not expressed their dissatisfaction, the right to appeal would have lapsed. Instead they now have until 4 October to decide whether or not to lodge an appeal.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the victim and the prosecutor have both expressed their approval of the district court's ruling.

"We will not be expressing dissatisfaction [with the verdict]. If the defendants appeal the verdict, we will consider filing a counter-appeal," district prosecutor Satu Pomoell told Yle.

Last week, the district prosecutor said that the court provided adequate justification for its decision, but noted that the prison sentences could have been longer. The prosecution had demanded longer sentences of 12, 9-and a-half and 11 years.

The court ruled that the three teenagers were criminally responsible for their actions but they were not given the full sentences demanded by the prosecutor because they were 16 years old at the time of the murder.
