The nationwide recommendation for people to work remotely where possible should end on 15 October, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health have proposed in a joint press release.

The proposal further suggests that a return to workplaces could begin earlier, depending on risk assessments and each region's epidemiological situation.

"Extending the recommendation on remote work until mid-October gives workplaces, in consultation with employees, an opportunity to flexibly transition to an increasingly hybrid model that combines remote and in-office work," the statement said.

The ministries stated that by the middle of next month vaccine coverage would be close to the government's target for 80 percent of the population aged 12 and over to be fully-vaccinated, allowing people to return to workplaces.

Therefore, employers should begin preparing for workers to combine on-site and remote working, the ministries said.

If the telecommuting recommendation does end, employers will assume more responsibility for occupational health and safety, they added.

"With more people present in the workplace, protection against the coronavirus will continue to be necessary," the statement said.

The ministries added that the proposal was based on assessments provided by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare THL and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
