Finland's government decided on Thursday that the Vainikkala border point would open to rail traffic from Monday 18 October.

The crossing handles rail traffic between Russia and Finland, and has been closed due to the Covid pandemic.

Although the border guard told Yle it is ready to check trains if they start running, passenger traffic is not expected to start straight away.

Any decision on starting passenger rail services again will be taken by the Finnish and Russian state railway firms.

The government also decided on Thursday to remove all entry restrictions on passengers arriving in Finland from any of the countries or regions on the EU's 'green list'. Other entry restrictions will remain in force until 7 November.
