The Central Finland District Court has sentenced former Jyväskylä City Councillor Teemu Torssonen to one year and five months' probation. Torssonen will also have to surrender his weapon to the state.
Torssonen was found guilty of aggravated assault, a firearms offense and an illegal threat, the district court stated in its verdict.
In March last year, Torssonen threatened to strike an unknown man with an ice auger. The man fled, but Torssonen followed him, hitting him several times over the head with a rock.
Torssonen has denied both acts.
Staged a break-in
In May last year, Torssonen staged a break-in to his vehicle, to avoid having to hand over his weapons to the police as part of an assault investigation.
Torssonen instead gave his weapons to an acquaintance living in a different part of the country, who hid them on his behalf.
To cover up his actions, Torssonen claimed that the guns had been stolen from his car.
Torssonen has also denied the firearms crime.
Doubts about the break-in arose when police investigated the attempted murder of Finns Party aide Pekka Kataja and went through Torssonen's computer. Torssonen was a suspect in that attack, but charges were dropped.
Torssonen used to be a member of the nationalist Finns Party, but has since been forced to resign. Since parting ways with the party, he has served as the only representative of the council group Jyväskylän Hyväksi (For Jyväskylä) until he failed to make it into the council during the summer municipal elections.
At the time of the crimes, he was still a city councillor.
