Heavy snowfall in Tampere causes bad driving conditions

There is more snow in store for the Pirkanmaa region and other areas on Tuesday morning.

The piles of snow that accumulated in Pirkanmaa in the early hours of Monday morning have even taken meteorologists by surprise.

"It snowed up to 12 centimetres in 12 hours, with the heaviest snowfall taking place in the Tampere suburb of Härmälä," said Sini Tenhunen, on-duty meteorologist at the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

According to the forecast, the precipitation in the west was expected to weaken slightly. That did happen, but a little later than anticipated, which resulted in the heavy snowfall.

Today it will snow in southern and central parts of the country and in western Lapland.

The intersections covered in snow, drifting snow flurries and icy drizzle all contribute to bad driving conditions.

The FMI has issued warnings for slippery roads across many areas of southern Finland, as well as elsewhere.

"It is worth being prepared for icy drizzle during the day," Tenhunen said.

Tonight, precipitation is expected in the southwest, and the temperature may be on the plus side. The thaw, however, is only temporary as icy conditions are expected to cover the entire country towards the end of the week.

"Maybe," Tenhunen added, as the weather has shown to be unpredictable lately.

More snow will arrive on Tuesday, with more than five centimetres expected to fall in Pirkanmaa overnight.

Dangerous driving conditions

Despite the bad driving conditions, Pirkanmaa did not see any major accidents as of Monday morning.

Marja Sillanpää, the traffic operator of the Tampere Road Traffic Center, says that the night passed without incident.

"It has been surprisingly calm. Maybe people were already used to snow. We hope that everyone will reach their destination safely," she said.

"Drifting snow dust makes traffic difficult. One should drive carefully," she said.

A long day for the plows

Aurina Tiina Kalliomäki began clearing the roads of Tampere at midnight.

"There is so much snow that there is no end in sight," she said.

The snow was anticipated, so Kalliomäki had time to sleep a little on Sunday evening before going to work.

On Monday morning, the plows had cleared bus routes and their dedicated traffic lanes in Tampere. Next up are the residential areas.
