Some 8.5 percent of Finland's 3.9 million eligible voters have already availed of the opportunity to submit their ballots in advance of next week's final day of regional election polling on Sunday 23 January.

This amounts to about 333,000 people.

Advance voting ballot boxes opened across the country on Wednesday, with polling stations reporting a busier first couple of days compared to last year's municipal elections.

However, the advance voting period for the municipal poll was extended to two weeks due to the coronavirus situation at the time, while the period for the regional election is only one week.

Ballot boxes for advance voting in this election are open at many libraries and shopping centres across the country until Tuesday 18 January, with a list of locations and opening times available from the Ministry of Justice's website.

It is also possible to vote outdoors in some municipalities.
