VR announced on Saturday that its logistics subsidiary VR Transpoint would suspend the reception of freight trains from Russia at noon on Sunday.

"The continuation of freight traffic between Russia and Finland is no longer possible because of the sanctions imposed on Russian Railways (RZD). VR Group is obliged to comply with the sanctions imposed by the Western countries," VR Transpoint SVP Martti Koskinen said in a statement.

Russian wagons will be allowed to return across the border for the time being.

Last Allegro trains nearly booked up

A day earlier, VR announced that Allegro passenger trains between Helsinki and St. Petersburg will be suspended on Monday.

According to VR, the last few Allegro train departures this weekend are almost sold out.

The service had resumed in December after an extended hiatus during the pandemic. VR said it was asked by the state to keep the trains running despite Russia's attack on Ukraine in order to allow Finns to return from Russia, as there are no flights available.

Only Finnish and Russian citizens with a full round of EU-approved vaccinations have been allowed on the train.
