Johan Bäckman, known for his connections to Russian authorities, has for years been actively providing Russian state television with news stories and press releases denigrating Finland and other Western countries, according to material seen by Helsingin Sanomat.
Bäckman is an academic with outspoken views that support Russia's foreign policy and that oppose Nato and the alliance's expansion.
The information related to Bäckman comes from the Russian state radio and television company All-Russia State Television and Broadcasting Company (VGTRK), which is the Kremlin's main provider of propaganda and disinformation.
The material analysed by Helsingin Sanomat covers more than 90 emails sent by Bäckman to VGTRK between 2014 and 2020 found as part of a cooperative international journalism investigation.
In February this year, the Supreme Court handed Bäckman a 60 day suspended prison sentence over his harassment of Yle journalist Jessica Aro.
