Police departments across Finland will step up the enforcement of speeding laws on the nation's road on Wednesday 7 September.

The campaign will include the use of specially dedicated speed enforcement units.

An analysis of fatal car accidents carried out by the Finnish Crash Data Institute (OTI) in 2020 found that one third of the collisions were mainly caused by drivers exceeding speed limits by 10 kilometres per hour or more at the time of the accident.

In half of all fatal crashes involving a single vehicle, the car was found to be travelling at more than 30 kilometres per hour over the limit.

In a statement, police said that excessive speed leads to dangerous situations — particularly when overtaking other vehicles — and also gives the driver less time to react.

In addition, police said, the time saved by speeding is insignificant in most cases.
