Finnish authorities have decided to invalidate all of the roughly 550 newly-issued passports that were sent to the wrong people last week.
A week ago, Yle reported about the surprise that Risto Laamanen received when he opened an envelope containing someone else's new passport. Then it was learned that the issue affected hundreds of other passports.
Last Friday, the National Police Board, which is in charge of passport issues, acknowledged that dozens of the travel documents were still in the wrong hands.
Now, the Police Board told Yle on Monday that cancelling the incorrectly-delivered passports and making new ones would be more secure than trying to track down the missing documents.
Police have received calls from people concerned about the situation. Meanwhile, the Police Board said it plans to send letters to the 550 affected individuals, informing them whether their passport was delivered to the wrong person or if the document was taken out of the delivery process.
Authorities have blamed the distribution error on a mailing machine technical glitch.
The development in the weeklong story was first reported by newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
