The Eastern Uusimaa police department suspect that two men used a large bucket loader to steal an ATM from the exterior wall of a supermarket in the village of Mäntsälä early on Friday morning.
Police suspect that the men first took the heavy equipment from Liedontie street. Surveillance video shows the loader being driven to the Citymarket on Sälinkääntie, police said in a statement.
The men used the loader to tear the cash machine out of the wall and carry it away, according to police.
Under normal circumstances, bucket loaders are used to move materials like rock, sand, soil or other heavy objects.
The suspects took the ATM-laden heavy vehicle back to Liedontie, but about 200 meters away from where it was originally commandeered, police said.
Authorities also suspect that another vehicle, outfitted with a covered trailer, was involved in the theft.
Mantsälä is located about 60km northeast of downtown Helsinki.
Police have asked people who were in the area between 2 to 4am on Friday to contact authorities.
Eyewitness observations can be forwarded to the Eastern Uusimaa police department's WhatsApp hotline at 050 399 9026 or via email, at vihjeet.ita-uusimaa@poliisi.fi.
