Driving conditions across some parts of Lapland were very poor on Wednesday afternoon, due to the season's first heavy snowfall.
Conditions were particularly poor on National road 21, between Tornio and Kilpisjärvi.
Overnight rain that froze on roads worsened the slippery conditions as the precipitation turned into snow.
Local rescue services reported two vehicle accidents on Wednesday morning, including a deer collision in Ylitornio and a car hitting a guardrail in Rovaniemi.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued traffic warnings for most of northeast Finland, from Kainuu up to Kittilä until midnight. It predicts poor road conditions because of freezing drizzle, snow or sleet and snow-covered roads, causing an enhanced risk of traffic accidents.
According to the FMI, snow depth in most of northern Lapland is now about 2-4 centimetres, but Kilpisjärvi at the far tip of Finland's northwestern arm already has 13 cm on the ground.
