Driving conditions were very bad across the Uusimaa region in southern Finland on Monday, due to heavy snowfall, according to warnings issued by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

Roads conditions were also poor in Southwestern Finland and on Åland, the agency said.

Around three to five centimetres of snow fell across southern Finland on Monday. However, the snowfall is expected to weaken as Monday evening progresses.

The weather agency forecasts that temperatures will remain below zero during the week.

Meanwhile, the season's lowest temperature was hit in Lapland on Monday morning, with the temperature at a weather station in Sodankylä's Vuotso village reading -26 degrees Celsius.

The agency forecast that Lapland was expected to be similarly chilly until Thursday, when the temperature is expected to rise to around -5 degrees Celsius.
