Hockey world championship medals unveiled

The medals at this year’s Ice Hockey World Championships will feature an eye-catching design. The winning entry in a competition held to design the new medals is named Winning Goal, and was produced by Vesilahti artist Tapio Kettunen.

The distinctive medal features a puck bursting through a goal net, Kettunen's vision of the winning goal in the World Championship final.

“The winning design was positively different. The tournament medals have never been anything like this one,” said Kalervo Kummola, International Ice Hockey Federation Vice President and chairman of the jury.

Kettunen was ecstatic about his win. The 48-year-old said that Helsinki’s current status as a world leader in innovative design helped sway his choice of design.

“I was about to turn in another, more traditional design as well, but when I heard Mr Kummola mention the Helsinki World Design Capital year, I thought that a more modern design would be the way to go,” said the artist.
