Räsänen re-elected to lead Christian Democrats

As expected, Christian Democrat Chairman Päivi Räsänen was re-elected as party chairwoman. Räsänen has led the party since 2004, and ran unchallenged for the post.

Räsänen, re-elected for two more years, pledged to serve until her term ends. She said it will still take time for the Christian Democrats to become accustomed to government work after four periods of being in opposition.

A total of six people are still vying for three Christian Democrat vice-chairmanships.

Last night the party also chose Asmo Maanselkä as interim party secretary.

Last year Maanselkä wrote in a blog post - referring to the gas attack on the Helsinki Pride Parade - that the parade is a provocation, and hinted that the attack was the Pride participants' own fault.

The Christian Democrats decided to postpone the decision on its own presidential candidate until November.
