Väyrynen stated a flat "no" to NATO membership and reiterated a commitment to the continuation of Finnish neutrality.
"My own position is clear and unwavering: Finland must preserve its status as a militarily non-aligned, neutral nation. In foreign policy is most important that Finland continue on the safe path laid out by J.K Paasikivi and Urho Kekkonen following the war," he told the Centre party gathering.
Paavo Väyrynen also said that if he wins the presidency, he will active in EU affairs, especially in matters that fall within the scope of presidential powers. For the most part, EU affairs are the province of the prime minister and the cabinet.
The new Centre Party candidate added that he considers Finland's membership in the eurozone as a mistake and pointed out that his party opposed the move.
The 65 year-old Paavo Väyrynen holds a doctorate in political science, is a former MP and MEP and has a number of different cabinet posts. He is a former chairman of the Centre Party, and its Honorary President.
