Post wants to open islanders' mail

Instead of transporting letters by ship to inhabitants in the Turku archipelago, the post wants to open and electronically scan physical letters, which it would send to recipients via email. The proposal has ignited debate regarding mail secrecy.

National post service Itella says scanning letters will ensure that people receive their mail regardless of weather conditions. Physical letters would be delivered to recipients every two weeks.

The initiative is making waves. People are upset by the idea that correspondence related to personal banking and healthcare would be opened by a third party. The proposal was also criticised for assuming that everyone has a personal computer and internet hookup.

Itella has already tested the model in an area of Porvoo.
