Finland and the USA affirm good relations

Finland’s Foreign Minister, Erkki Tuomioja, and the US ambassador to Finland, Bruce Oreck, said Wednesday that relations between the two countries are in good shape and that old resentments have been forgotten during President Barack Obama’s term in power.

Finland is, however, somewhat concerned that the White House has not opened its doors for the Finnish leadership in many years. President Halonen last visited the White House in 2002. The ambassador assures that there is nothing serious behind the fact—just busy schedules.

Tuomioja has faced criticism for not fostering sufficient ties with the US.

“I do not myself feel that there are any problems,” he notes. “There haven’t been any personal problems or ones relating to Finland, and I don’t see any reason why there would be.”
