A nurse who was convicted of killing a 79-year-old disabled patient in 2007 by injecting her with insulin killed herself on Monday. She was found dead in her prison cell in Turku.

Heikki Vartiainen of Finland’s Criminal Sanctions Agency said officials had reason to suspect the nurse was suicidal and had tried to prevent her from harming herself. Vartiainen was unable to say how she had been able to commit suicide.

Earlier this month, the Turku Appeals Court upheld the life sentence handed down by the Tampere District Court last May. The nurse was also found guilty of attempted murder of an eight-month-old baby.

She had denied all the charges.
