The City Council of Tampere voted on the issue on Wednesday, giving Nieminen of the National Coalition Party a four-year term. He has already served as mayor for two years. Nieminen scored a clear victory over his Social Democrat rival Hanna Tainio by a vote of 39 to 28.
Nieminen received the support of councillors from the National Coalition, Centre and Christian Democrat parties in addition to that from non-aligned members.
Tampere is the only city in Finland to be governed a mayor selected by the council instead of a city manager.
Councillors also unanimously selected Irene Roivainen of the Green League as new chair of the Tampere City Council.
