Over Forty Million Euros Set Aside for Mission in Lebanon

Finland plans to allocate over 40 million euros for the peacekeeping operation in Lebanon, according to Minister of Finance Eero Heinäluoma.

This year 16.5 million euros will be reserved for the mission. Next year, 26.9 million euros will be appropriated to the operation, reports the newspaper Kauppalehti Presso.

The Ministry of Defence is expected to cover 80 percent of this year’s expenses while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will finance 60 percent of next year's costs. The project will be funded by the budget surplus.

On Monday, the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy will discuss a plan to send the majority of the 250 peacekeepers to the area between October and November. The Committee aims to provide a plenary session of parliament on Tuesday with its report, which could be approved as soon as Thursday.

Finland’s humanitarian aid to Lebanon increased to 4.5 million euros this year, according to Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Paula Lehtomäki.
