In Tactical Shift, Air Force Seeks Long-Range Missiles

Finland and the United States are negotiating the sale of long-range missiles and other improvements to Finland’s small fleet of Hornet jet fighters.

The government's military shopping list also includes upgrades to the fighters' radar and communication systems, as well as short-range precision bombs.

The intention is to get the Hornets into prime condition and more compatible with foreign military standards by the year 2012 at the earliest.

This is a historic tactical shift, because for 60 years Finland's air force has equipped itself almost exclusively for anti-aircraft defence, and not for bombardment.

Regarding the potential deal with the US, a Finnish military spokesman noted that nothing has been agreed, and that Finland is still exploring its options. The United States Department of Defence has agreed in principle to a deal.
