Largest-Ever Snuff Smuggling Ring Uncovered

Officials in western Finland have uncovered the largest-ever snuff smuggling ring.

The newspaper Keskipohjanmaa reports that the operation, run by two Finnish men, included dozens of people acting as couriers and sellers.

Customs officials say the operation smuggled more than 400,000 tins of snuff, or chewing tobacco, from Sweden – with a total street value of more than two million euros.

Two men in Sweden have also been arrested in connection with the smuggling ring.

Until now, the largest snuff-smuggling operation was run out of Helsinki, where a local man will soon be charged with selling more than 100,000 tins of tobacco. The government is planning to file for 300,000 euros in damages and unpaid taxes.

It’s legal to bring in snuff for personal use from other countries, but it is illegal to re-sell it. In Finland, a tin of snuff runs about five euros on the street, which is still twice as much as what it costs in Sweden.
