Vanhanen Concerned Over Perlos Layoffs

Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen says he is seriously concerned over mass layoffs announced last week by the telecommunications and electronics manufacturer Perlos in the Joensuu area of eastern Finland.

During a visit to Joensuu he said society should be ready to deal with a large loss of jobs in the region of Joensuu and Kontiolahti. He added that firms seeking to expand their operations should be encouraged to invest in the area.

The Prime Minister added the solution did not lie in the level of government financial support but rather on projects aimed at securing long term employment.

Consultative talks at Perlos on the future of 1,200 jobs began on Monday. Early last week, Perlos announced that it would shut down production in Finland due to decreasing domestic demand, and will instead invest more in China and India resulting in 4,000 layoffs globally.
