Finns Very Supportive of Development Aid

Finns are widely supportive of foreign development aid, according to a survey commissioned by the Foreign Ministry. Many feel that Finland should be doing even more.

Around 90 percent of respondents said foreign aid was an important obligation. Close to two-thirds said that Finland should increase the amount of money set aside.

Many people were concerned, however, about third-world corruption, and feared that aid money does not always get to its intended destination.

The poll also showed that Finns held a few grim stereotypes of the developing world. In general, they think that the literacy rate and life expectancy are much lower than they actually are.

In addition, they are very pessimistic on whether the United Nations will be able to reach its Millennium Goals, which is a set of development goals for things like education, infrastructure, economic and democratic development in the developing world.
